Every day, there’s a new trade rumour swirling in the NBA, but one player who has remained constant with these rumours has to be Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis. The former Lakers star has struggled with injuries this season, and despite his decent output when available, Davis has failed to convince the Dallas front office that he could lead this team to greater heights.

As per NBA Insider Christian Clark’s column on The Athletic, the Mavericks are desperate to be a competitive roster, and for that, they are open to hearing offers for many of their veteran players, including Anthony Davis. However, they will only move with a trade if they get the right value, as they prefer holding to the core of the roster.

The Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks have shown interest in the 10-time All-Star as per ESPN. In all senses, an Eastern Conference team may push for Davis if he becomes available, as acquiring someone of Anthony Davis’ stature would instantly make them a contender for the NBA Finals.

Any team pursuing the former NBA Champion will have to be careful about his injury history and high wage demands. He is turning 33 in March and has a $62.8 million player option in 2027-28.

Apart from AD, the Mavericks are allegedly open to hearing offers for veteran center Daniel Gafford and fellow guards D’Angelo Russell and Klay Thompson, who have been far from their best for Dallas this season.

It has been a tough season for Anthony Davis and the Mavericks as they sit in 10th position in the West with an underwhelming 10-16 record. They have a 6-5 record with the big man on court. However, AD has struggled with his incessant injury absence this season. Ever since his return from left adductor strain in November, the Mavs are 4-2 with wins over the Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets.

Anthony Davis may again be sidelined for Monday’s game against the Utah Jazz as he is listed as ‘questionable’. Despite his season average of 20 points and 10.5 rebounds per game being at an All-Star level, he inspires little confidence for any team, mainly due to his constant injury troubles. This could very well be a deciding factor for the Mavs in their attempt to secure a fair trade deal for AD.

The Dallas Mavericks aren’t in a rush to make an Anthony Davis decision

Despite their desperate attempt to make the roster more competitive, the Mavs may take a wait-and-watch approach in the Anthony Davis trade calls. They are not in the market to hold a fire sale, but it is not that a decision cannot be made come the trade deadline on February 5.

Dallas is comfortable in keeping hold of their core, but at the same time, it seems only logical if they decide to trade players like Caleb Martin, Gafford, Russell and Thompson. Neither Russell nor Martin was a part of their Friday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets. Neither of the veterans has elevated the roster’s level by any means, and hence, the Mavs front office may take a call on their future.

The narrative is the same around Klay Thompson and Daniel Gafford as they haven’t been at their best, and even their numbers have fallen off the cliff in recent times. Mavericks HC Jason Kidd has preferred undrafted guard Ryan Nembhard over Thompson owing to the former’s meteoric rise.

Anthony Davis joined Dallas to play with Kyrie Irving, with whom he shares a close bond. But things didn’t fall into place with both the players, as AD got sidelined with a left adductor strain and before his return, Kyrie also tore his left ACL, and they only played two and a half quarters together.

The Mavs have been extremely cautious with their star guard, and there’s no timeline on his return, but they expect him to play a role later this season. He and their no. 1 pick Cooper Flagg are the franchise cornerstones, making Davis the disposable option.

However, there’s no hurry whatsoever as Dallas is willing to wait till the summer to tweak their roster and also give time to Davis to rebuild his trade value by getting more consistent minutes under his belt. The Mavericks have until August to take a call on the 32-year-old, as it will be around that time that he will be eligible for a contract extension.

It seems the Dallas Mavericks may let go of Anthony Davis, now or in a few months. Where do you think he will end up eventually?
