NASCAR’s 2023 season, or better, its 75th anniversary season, has been packed with goodies for the fandom. Foraying into uncharted territory at Le Mans and Chicago, fans were treated to a racing spectacle like no other. To further up the excitement quotient, this season also saw an all-time high influx of international drivers.

Even drivers like Chris Buescher and Michael McDowell had the racing community going bonkers with their surprise wins. Not done appeasing its fans, NASCAR recently teased an update hoping to once again enthrall the racing community. But the outcome was quite different as the update left fans scratching their heads. 

What caused the racing community’s confusion?

Easter eggs and teasers are the prevalent ways to keep the fans enthralled, and NASCAR is no different. For the 2023 season, NASCAR fans were handed their fair share of teaser drama. Earlier treated to new car livery unveils, the racing community was then handed a veiled announcement, hinting at a new partnership with a gaming giant. Be what it may, fans were enthralled at each and every turn. But who would have expected NASCAR’s next move?

Throwing a curveball at its audience, NASCAR recently put out a tweet on the NASCAR Classics account, causing utter confusion. Writing “What have we here?” as the tweet’s caption, NASCAR put out a digitally rendered image of what appears to be a grey Ford Mustang. Sitting on an assembly line, the car also has NASCAR’s signature golden, red, and blue stripes, with the words ‘Classics’ embossed in white on the left rear quarter panel. Apart from the above-mentioned details, no other information was provided by the motorsport organization.

Could it be a new game, a new racing genre, or a new generation car? No one knows for sure. But what we do know is fans were left extremely confused. 

Fans speculate the meaning behind NASCAR’s cryptic tweet

Left scratching their heads by the tweet’s cryptic nature, fans on Twitter then proceed to decrypt the tweet. Speculating the announcement of a new video game, one fan wrote, “I really hope this is a new video game”.

Wondering if the tweet hinted at the elimination of the stage racing format, another fan commented, “Getting rid of stage racing [triple eyes emoji]”.

Expressing frustration on being unable to decipher the tweets contents, a fan proceeded to ask fellow Twitter users, “the HELL does this mean chat”. Here are some more comments from the fans.
