Is there anything in racing that Tony Stewart hasn’t won? Don’t scratch your brains; the answer is no! Be it, NASCAR, Indy cars, IROC, SRX, sprint cars, midget cars, the list goes on. Running various formats is one thing, but winning them all is another. There isn’t anyone else in the world who can call themselves a three-time NASCAR champion, an IndyCar champion, multiple-time USAC triple crown winner, two-time Chili Bowl champion, and so on. Well, Kyle Larson seems to be on that path, winning multiple Chili Bowls, sprint races, and midgets. He’s also running the Indy 500 this year. But, when asked if he’d try his hands on Stewart’s recent endeavor, Kyle Larson had a shocking answer!

For the folks who don’t know, Stewart cannot catch a break. After all this, he is now in the NHRA. When Leah Pruett announced her pregnancy, the Tony Stewart Racing needed a replacement driver in their Top Fuel Dragster program. That’s when the team owner, himself, stepped up, piloting his wife’s car. If winning Rookie of the Year in the very first season of competing isn’t enough, look what he has done now!

Kyle Larson calls Tony Stewart old!

Thanks to Pruett taking another season off to spend time with their son, Tony got another season in her car. Stewart is currently in his second season, and he’s already gotten his first win. He won the recent race on the Las Vegas drag strip, beating Antron Brown. Taming the 11,000-horsepower beast isn’t easy. And this has truly cemented his position as the greatest driver of the racing world. Period. But this is one achievement that Larson isn’t so keen on getting for himself. He’s apparently not that old yet! And we know Larson has always tried to do what Stewart does.

On many occasions, he has named Smoke as his hero! Remember back in 2021? Kyle Larson had said, “If I really had a true racing hero, I would say it’s Tony Stewart. I’ve always believed him to be the best racecar driver ever. I try to model my racing and my schedule off what I feel like Tony Stewart would do.” But well, NHRA Top Fuel might not be on Kyle Larson’s immediate to-do list.

Speaking of this on the ‘Stacking Pennies’ podcast, he said, “I don’t know…it’s not on the table currently. I don’t know. No, I don’t think so. But I’m only 32. I feel like that’s what people do when they turn 50. Let’s go 300 and some miles now. Like, that’s a great time of my life to do that. Maybe once I turn 50 and get old like him. I’ll change my mind.” Now, hold up! And we know Larson doesn’t mean to insult Stewart here.

By old, he means vintage, the GOAT. Anyway, Larson, yet again, lauded Stewart as the greatest of all time. “I woke up this morning and saw the news that he won. That was really cool. Just another awesome thing to add to his resume and just solidify him even more. (He) is the greatest all-around race car driver ever. So, pretty cool. You know awesome to been able to race with him. In few of those different types of cars that he has won,” Larson added.

Also, recently, Larson is about to re-attempt something that only Tony Stewart has ever completed. And Smoke had some words of motivation for him.

Tony Stewart’s verdict on Kyle Larson’s double attempt

‘Double duty’ is when a driver runs 1100 miles in a single day, first the Indianapolis 500 and then flies back to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. Five drivers have attempted it, including Kyle Larson last season, but so far, only Stewart has been able to finish it successfully. It was back in 2001 when Stewart did it! But like Smoke, even the HMS driver is persistent and is re-attempting the feat this year. What’s impressive about this is how different the two cars and the two tracks are. And to be successful in both is what makes it thrilling.

Last season, Larson completed the Indy race, but the NASCAR one was rain-shortened, and he couldn’t run a single lap. But this year, he’s hopeful to join Tony Stewart. “Last year gave us a great foundation, and now we get to build on it. I’m excited to come back stronger in 2025 and give it everything we’ve got to finish all 1,100 miles.” And even Stewart believes Larson can do it!

How Larson is a Stewart fan, so is Stewart. After the #5 driver won the 2021 championship, Stewart said, “Congratulations to the best race car driver I’ve ever seen.” That’s big coming from Stewart! Anyway, Tony has several times lauded Larson for his versatility, which must remind him of himself. And ahead of Larson’s second double attempt, Stewart said, “I don’t think it’s out of the realm for him to beat what we did in terms of performance. He’s more than capable of doing that, as well. If anyone’s going to break (Stewart’s feat), I’d like it to be Kyle. … Anytime he’s racing anything, I’m a fan.”
