If you’ve ever watched Yellowstone and thought, “This would be even crazier with race cars,” well… NASCAR might’ve just heard you. The sport is diving headfirst into Hollywood territory with a brand-new series that mixes family drama, legacy battles, and stock car racing. And now, with a major Hollywood name stepping in, this is shaping up to be NASCAR’s boldest storytelling swing yet. So, what’s all the hype about? Let’s find out.

Dennis Quaid steps into the NASCAR world

NASCAR’s Hollywood crossover just got a serious upgrade, with Dennis Quaid officially stepping into the spotlight for its upcoming series, Thunder Road. Developed in partnership with AMC Networks and NASCAR, the show is already being pitched as a high-stakes, character-driven drama in the same vein as Yellowstone. Only this time, the backdrop isn’t ranch land, it’s roaring engines and short tracks.

At the heart of the story is the Whitlock family, a multi-generational racing dynasty deeply rooted in the Southern stock car scene. Quaid will play Duane Whitlock, better known as “The Wrecking Ball,” a larger-than-life NASCAR legend who built his empire from the gritty world of moonshine runs and dirt track racing.

But now, that empire is on the brink. The character is described as a stubborn, old-school figure refusing to let his legacy fade, even as the sport and the world around him evolve. The series promises more than just racing action. It leans heavily into themes of family loyalty, power struggles, and survival, mirroring the emotional core that made Yellowstone a massive hit.

Behind the scenes, there’s serious firepower too. John Fusco leads as writer and executive producer, with Taylor Elmore serving as showrunner. NASCAR itself is deeply involved, with executives like Tim Clark helping shape the project. With production expected to begin soon, Thunder Road isn’t just another racing series but NASCAR’s attempt to tell its story in a way that goes far beyond the track.

NASCAR’s Hollywood surge

While Thunder Road is grabbing headlines, another major NASCAR-related project is quietly picking up momentum, and it involves a very familiar face. A sequel to Days of Thunder, starring Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle, is reportedly inching closer to reality.

According to Sports Business Journal, a Hollywood writer has been actively meeting with NASCAR teams and drivers to shape the script, signaling that this isn’t just talk anymore. The writer is believed to be Will Staples. And if you know, he has already immersed himself in the sport, attending the Phoenix championship race and the Daytona 500 earlier this year.

This push isn’t coming out of nowhere either.

Following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise has reportedly been keen on revisiting some of his earlier hits. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed as much last year, noting Cruise’s interest in bringing Days of Thunder back to life. Bruckheimer himself has stayed busy in the racing world, recently producing F1: The Movie starring Brad Pitt, which further fuels speculation about how far this motorsports-Hollywood crossover could go.

Recently, Jeff Gordon also gave a positive update on Cruise’s intentions. “And I saw Tom what one or two years ago, and he actually brought it up then, and we were just laughing about it, and then he’s like, ‘No, I’m serious. Like this is going to happen.’ So when Tom Cruise says that you take it seriously.”

Of course, the original Days of Thunder had a mixed reception upon release, often compared heavily to Top Gun due to its similar storyline. But over the decades, the movie is a cult classic now among Cruise and NASCAR fans. With nostalgia playing a huge role in modern filmmaking, and NASCAR leaning into storytelling like never before, the timing might finally be right.

If it all comes together, NASCAR could soon have not one, but two major Hollywood projects redefining how the sport connects with a broader audience.
