Sometimes you just know that it’s the perfect time to move away from the game. And if you ask any retired player, they will tell you the same thing. After giving almost half his life to the sport of baseball, a former All-Star is saying goodbye to his career.
In an interview with MLB Network, Jason Heyward said, “After 16 major league seasons, I’m going to announce my retirement.”

For now, he is done as a player. And one of the major reasons for this is that no teams have been in contact with him. In 2024, while with the Dodgers, he averaged .208 in 63 games. That stint ended when the team DFA’d him. After leaving the Dodgers, Heyward signed with the Houston Astros for the rest of the 2024 season. In 24 games for the Astros, he averaged .218.
In 2025, the San Diego Padres signed him. However, it was a bust as he ended the season with an average of .176 in 34 games before his release. That ended being his last season as a player.
Even with those numbers, Jason Heyward‘s career includes 5 golden gloves and a World Series. That championship came with the Cubs in 2016, ending a 108-year title drought. He struggled at the plate that year with a .631 OPS, but he was crucial in the field, posting 15 Defensive Runs Saved and 14 Outs Above Average.
But his biggest impact was off the field. During the Game 7 rain delay, he delivered a speech that teammates say shifted the momentum and sparked their 8-7 World Series victory. That combination of leadership, defense, and presence defines a career remembered for more than numbers.
Jayson Heyward’s legacy in the MLB
With Jayson Heyward hanging up his cleats, let us look at what he will leave behind as an MLB player.
Heyward started his 16-year run with the Braves in 2010 and later played for five more franchises. He moved to the Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, Astros, and Padres. That journey reflects durability, as few outfielders sustain roles across multiple teams for years.
He’s walking away as a one-time All-Star, some MVP votes over the years, and five Gold Gloves—four of which he won back-to-back from 2014 to 2017.
Other than this, he recorded more than 1500 hits and had steady on-base skills, which made the managers trust him when the game was on the line. Whenever a game got close or tight in the late innings, he went in to either make an elite defensive play or draw a crucial walk.
This shows the trust that Heyward had built with different managers across the leagues.
