It’s a moment that’s going to live in baseball infamy — not for a clutch home run or a jaw-dropping catch, but for two fans who took things a bit too far during Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. When Mookie Betts snared a fly ball near the stands, those in the front row were practically leaning over the edge, ready to snatch it from his glove. 

But things escalated when two fans, Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen went full-on WWE mode. As Betts tried to make the catch, they reached out and, no joke, grabbed his wrist, trying to rip the ball right out of his hand. The two were, predictably, hauled out of the game and are now permanently barred from going to any MLB games.

No more baseball games in the stadium for two Yanks fans  

The season tickets they were using? Belong to a long-time season-ticket holder who’s had those precious seats since 1990. According to the New York Post, that lucky fan wasn’t at the game, so his tickets are safe — but that doesn’t mean Capobianco and Hansen are getting a free pass. It turns out the season ticket holder isn’t exactly losing sleep over the whole incident. In fact, he’s fully backing MLB’s decision to ban Austin Capobianco and John P. Hansen for their unsporting behavior.   

And MLB? Well, the league didn’t mince words when it came to the two fans’ behavior. A letter obtained by The Post detailed the reasoning behind the indefinite ban. “Your conduct posed a serious risk to the health and safety of the player,” the letter read, calling the fans’ behavior. MLB also made it crystal clear: “Based on your conduct, Major League Baseball is banning you indefinitely from all MLB stadiums, offices, and other facilities.” In other words, for Austin and John, it’s official—they’re done with baseball for the foreseeable future.  

What does Mookie Betts think about the whole situation? 

We all know Mookie Betts as the cool-headed superstar, but not always. During a recent interview on Peacock’s “Back That Year Up 2024,” Betts’ showed us what he really thought about the situation. Betts claims that if he could do it over, he would most likely yell, “F–k you guys”.  It’s not exactly the kind of greeting you would anticipate from one of baseball’s most likable characters, but can you blame him?  

Ultimately, these Yanks fans did more than merely applaud from their seats; they grabbed his wrist in an attempt to tear the ball from his glove in the middle of the catch. Betts also acknowledged that he almost went too far in the excitement of the moment. He grinned as he added, “I considered tossing a ball at ’em, but then I realized, ‘Mook, you ain’t gonna do s–t. Return to your right field.””

In all honesty, though, anyone can identify with that fleeting moment of annoyance when you’re merely attempting to carry out your duties. On October 30, Betts, who was positioned in right field, was struck by a foul ball hit by then-Yankee Gleyber Torres. Before he could even savor the moment, these two supporters seized Betts’ glove and yanked the ball from its webbing as if they were attempting to claim a memento by grabbing it.
