The results promised have not been delivered so far, even though this MLB offseason has been nothing short of riveting. Ranging from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ recent blockbuster moves to Shohei Ohtani’s unexpected shifts have dominated headlines. However, one team that is yet to come out of stealth mode is the Boston Red Sox. While their offseason as promised was supposed to be filed with significant changes, the Red Sox have yet to go “full throttle”.

As it is almost time for the new season, one question arises: Are the Red Sox going to intensify their chase in a thin pitching market? It is no secret that there have been changes in the leadership. While that was a hopeful move, along with smaller moves in their roster, fans can’t wait to see what lies ahead as the year ends.

Boston Red Sox’s Plan For Starting Pitching

The BoSox’s offseason started with a glimmer of hope, thanks to the reassurance from chairman Tom Werner that the team would go “full throttle.” But, as one approaches the new year, the initial fervor has been replaced with silent anticipation. Granted that the Red Sox have not been completely silent. One of their strategic moves was acquiring Tyler O’Neill and bolstering their bullpen depth. But the marquee signing that fans look forward to, continues to remain cloudy.

Craig Breslow replacing their former Chief Baseball Officer, Chaim Bloom, comes with a mandate to boost their roster. Boston has been linked to a few top free-agent pitchers like Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, Lucas Giolito, and Japanese standout Shōta Imanaga. But, with each passing day, the pressure increases for the club to execute a decisive move.

The Red Sox were one of the top contenders during the Yoshinobu Yamamoto chase. However, feeling bummed out after missing out on him, they have a relatively shorter list to choose from at the moment. Maybe their silence is the ‘calm before the storm’. Breslow’s words at the Winter Meetings implied that starting pitching is their top priority. It’s safe to say, a big splash is imminent.

If Not the Top Tier for BoSox, Then What?

Though the Red Sox left Nashville with no deal, the club is likely to add other names. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand also stated that Marcus Stroman and Michael Lorenzen could be possible entrants for the Red Sox. Another young prospect is Brayan Bello, positioned as a promising entity in their rotation. His developing skills against the left-handed hitters might be something that the club can use.

Amid the ongoing uncertainty, as the Red Sox balances the pressure with fan expectations, is there a star incoming? Whichever way the needle swings, one thing is for sure. Boston will add at least one or two starting pitchers, if not a top tier free agent.
