Fenway Park turned on its own Sunday, as another humiliating loss for the Boston Red Sox wasn’t just met with boos, but with a demand that echoed through the historic ballpark.
Sitting at the bottom of the AL East, the Red Sox have a record of 2-7 so far. This Sunday, Fenway Park witnessed the Red Sox’s second defeat in a row against the visiting San Diego Padres, following their 3-2 loss on April 4. Now, after a 6-8 loss, the Red Sox Nation let the Boston ownership know exactly what they want.

The Red Sox failed to hold onto the 4-0 lead they had taken in the third inning. After their defeat, chants of “sell the team” floated through the ballpark. Jomboy Media posted a video where those chants can be clearly heard.
“’Sell the team’ chants can be heard in a quiet Fenway Park,” read the caption.
The Padres continued to chip away at Boston’s 4-0 lead in the fourth, after Fernando Tatis Jr. scored on Jackson Merrill’s single. By the end of the inning, with Merrill and Machado scoring, the Padres were at 3-4.
The franchise then turned the game to take a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning, after Manny Machado launched a three-run homer. Boston had a short bounce back by tying the score with Masataka Yoshida’s two-run double. But the Padres gained back their lead with Merrill’s solo homer in the top of the eighth, 7-6.
Another run in the ninth inning secured the Padres’ win.
With the Red Sox’s series loss becoming certain, chants rose against 76-year-old John Henry, the current owner of the Boston Red Sox through the Fenway Sports Group. In an otherwise quiet Fenway Park, that was the only sound we could hear prominently.
The Red Sox Nation’s displeasure with Henry is not new, and Boston’s recent poor performances re-ignited it.

In the last seven years, the franchise has gone into the playoffs only twice since winning the 2018 World Series. They finished last in the AL East in 2022, 2023, and 2024, with a 328-328 combined record from 2022 to 2024.
While they qualified for the postseason in 2025, the Boston Red Sox lost the AL Wild Card Series to the Yankees.
During Henry’s era, star-hitter Mookie Betts was traded for prospects that failed to leave their mark. That happened after Betts established himself as the most complete player in the club’s history during 2018, helping the team win a franchise-record 108 games before defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
The team also traded Rafael Devers, only two years into the deal. Finally, losing Alex Bregman to free agency added more fuel to the fire.
With Henry’s attention divided among his assets, which include the Liverpool FC and the NHL team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, fans want him to sell the Red Sox.
Following the match, even rookie phenomenon Roman Anthony called out the Red Sox’s disappointing loss.
Roman Anthony calls the loss ‘unacceptable’ for fans
The 21-year-old Red Sox phenomenon, Roman Anthony, made headlines when he signed an eight-year, $130 million contract with the Boston team in October 2025.
The Red Sox had presented Anthony as their star hitter of the future. After the team failed to convert their 4-0 lead to a win, Anthony spoke to the reporters.
“This is unacceptable. It’s unacceptable to the fans. It’s unacceptable to the standard that we set for ourselves,” responded Anthony.
Nine games into the new season, the Red Sox have already recorded 7 losses. Anthony told the media that the team needs to improve as a whole. Everyone has an equal responsibility, and no single player is to be blamed.
“I think just as a team, we need to be better. I need to be better. Everyone in this room understands that they need to be better. And it’s as simple as that. A lot of season left,” noted the young player.
For the last three games, Anthony has served as Boston’s designated hitter. He recorded a run and a walk against the Padres on Sunday.
This season, Anthony’s slash line stands at .235/.316/.382 with 1 homer and 2 RBI in 34 at-bats till now.
The Red Sox will next face the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game series starting on Monday.
