Jasson Dominguez was carted off Thursday night after a scary crash into the left-field wall against the Texas Rangers.

He made a spectacular leaping catch on a 101-mph line drive from Brandon Nimmo, but crashed his head and left shoulder hard into the digital scoreboard.

Trainers and manager Aaron Boone rushed out as Dominguez stayed motionless on the ground. The Yankees have already placed him in concussion protocol, and he was sent to the hospital for an MRI on his shoulder to check for serious damage.

“Jasson Dominguez makes the catch in left field, then crashes into the fencing of the outfield wall. He remained down for several moments and received medical attention. Dominguez is shaking his head as they drive him off in a medical cart,” MLB insider Bryan Hoch shared via X.

While Dominguez’s stunning catch denied Brandon Nimmo extra bases at the top of the first inning, his full velocity collision with the outfield LED screen ended up in spraining the AC joint in his left shoulder. He was seen wiping off tears in the dugout.

Placing Dominguez on the IL, the Yankees have finally called up top prospect Spencer Jones for his MLB debut.

Over 33 games in Scranton this season, Jones is hitting .258/.366/.592 with 11 homers, 41 RBIs, a 32.4% strikeout rate, a 12.7% walk rate, and a 143 wRC+. Jones is a plus outfielder who can cover center field when needed and plays all three outfield spots with above-average instincts. The Yankees are betting that a player who ranks in the 99th percentile in exit velocity and barrel percentage is going to make enough contact at the major league level.

But the injury has restarted a debate about player safety.

It reminded many of the Taylor Ward injury from last year.

Ward hit a metal scoreboard in Houston and needed 20 stitches. Players have asked the league for years to put better padding on the digital billboards and metal fences to prevent such crashes.

The Yankees have lost a good portion of their offense in the last few days.

Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton both were sidelined with injuries. Jasson Dominguez got promoted due to Stanton’s injury, and the Yankees were hoping to see him repeat his spring and minors stats.

He dominated spring training with a .347 average, four home runs, and a massive 1.062 OPS. Still, he was demoted for lack of space in the active roster. But Stanton’s injury and his impressive .326 batting in the minors in 2026 forced the Yankees to call him back.

In eight games with the Yankees, he was batting .200 with a .617 OPS and one home run.

Now, with the offense taking a battering, the Yankees need their pitching to step up.

The Yankees need their pitchers back on an immediate basis

The Yankees are currently doing well and leading the division, but their injury list has worsened. With Dominguez out, the Yankees’ lineup is taking a big hit, but the pitching staff is finally getting some relief.

Carlos Rodon is set to make his season debut this Sunday against the Brewers. This will be his first start since having elbow surgery last October. He looked sharp in his three minor league rehab games, pitching 16 innings with a solid 3.38 ERA.

“I think the biggest challenge for him now has been getting that command back over the last couple of months,” manager Aaron Boone noted.

Geritt Cole, the name the Yankees are waiting for since last year, is finally near his MLB return.

He is on the final leg of his rehab and is expected to return in the next few weeks. These returnees could offer a breath of fresh air to the clubhouse.
