If there is one thing that the New York Yankees are not doing right now, it is playing it cool. From Twins $3 million ace Joe Ryan to their utility man Will Castro to Harrison Bader and pretty much the entire Twins bullpen, the New York Yankees are throwing everything at the wall in hopes that something sticks before July 31.
The Yanks have already added Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario to fill some holes. But it’s pretty evident that they are still on the hunt. Their recent target, you may ask? The Twins’ bullpen, as reported by the former GM and current MLB insider Jim Bowden.
According to him, the Yanks are “speed dialing” the Twins “at an annoying level,” trying to pry away some of Minnesota’s top talent. In Bowden’s words, they have gone after basically their entire bullpen. And that does track out.

With Aaron Judge out, Volpe slumping, and the rotation basically in shambles, the New York Yankees know that time is running out fast. ESPN’s Buster Olney even mentioned that a possible reunion with Bader seems possible. He had a short but memorable time on the Yankees roster, and the chatter around Castro, though, has been going on for weeks now.
For now, though, the biggest concern for the New York Yankees is pitching. Since July 1, their ERA has gone up to 6.03, and it is the second worst in the league. This is why right now, someone like Joe Ryan, who has a 2.82 ERA over 121.1 innings, seems rather appealing. The problem is that he is not really up for grabs, and if he were, the cost wouldn’t be affordable—it would be expensive.
So most likely, the targets are someone like Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, or Danny Coulombe. Duran and Jax are under the team’s control through 2027, and it simply raises the price and the frustration. To make matters even trickier, the Yankees nearly landed Chris Paddack earlier this week until the Tigers swooped in. The deadline is approaching, and the Yankees are for sure not waiting by the phone.

Are the Yankees' desperate moves a sign of panic or a strategic masterstroke?

Did you know DJ LeMahieu helped the New York Yankees seal the McMahon trade?
The Colorado Rockies made quite a splash ahead of the trade deadline last week. They said goodbye to one of their longtime guys, Ryan McMahon. He is a homegrown third baseman who has been with the Colorado since 2017. Though he is now a New York Yankee, the Rockies received two young arms in return: Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz.
And letting go of McMahon couldn’t have been easy; he had been part of the Rockies since they drafted him from Mater Dei High School back in 2013. However, this move had more than emotion; it was about the future. And as far as McMahon is concerned, he is already making himself at home with the New York Yankees. In his first three games as a Yankee, he is hitting. 444 with three RBI, and he has looked sharp on the field. With DJ LeMahieu now out of the scene, he seems to have slid right comfortably into the third base role. A position that has been a revolving door for the team.
Now here is where it gets interesting: apparently, DJ LeMahieu had something to do with this deal even taking place. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal mentioned that the Yankees had reached out to McMahon’s former teammates for background. And DJ gave them a glowing review for him, as he had played with McMahon in Colorado back in 2017 and 2018. And that personal insight might have sealed the deal.

As far as LeMahieu, he is in a holding pattern. Given that injuries derailed his last few seasons, he was designated for assignment. Now at 37, he is waiting to see if any team is looking for infield help.
