Two legends: Five World Series rings, almost 90 years of dugout wisdom, and yet another playoff looming—MLB’s golden generation of skippers that might pass on the torch at season’s end. And it’s one of the most reliable voices in MLB, Jon Heyman, who just threw a curveball with his take.

Recently, Jon Heyman joined the conversation on MLB Central. There, he was asked about possible managerial changes that might come by season’s end. He painted a clear picture of who can retire, and he revealed some interesting names.
Heyman circled that age was the primary factor in his analysis. MLB Network shared it on the discussion on their X. Jon Heyman said, “All the older guys that we are looking at.” Then came the names, “Bruce Bochy, I think he’s arguably the greatest manager in history, right? He’s got four World Series titles as an underdog. Incredible. But he has hit 70 at this point. His contract is up. He may well retire.” Well, there’s another name, “And we have one more, and that is, of course, Brian Snitker with the Braves. I think that there is a decent chance that he will retire.” Snitker is 69, and he will hit 70 by next season.

Both skippers accomplished amazing feats under their leadership.
Let’s talk about Bochy for a minute. Under his leadership, the Rangers won their first World Series in 2023, and for Bochy, it was his fourth ring— having previously won three World Series titles while managing the Giants, to victory in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Adding to the accolades, by the middle of May, he had won 2,195 games, which put him in the company of other great managers. If he does step down, who will take his place in Texas? Heyman answered that, too. He stated, “The heir apparent would be Skip Schumaker. Obviously, he’s their former Manager of the Year in Miami. Absolutely.” Schumaker currently has a more front-office role as senior adviser for the Rangers.
Now, Snitker has been with the Braves for almost 50 years and is entering his tenth year as an MLB manager. And in January 2023, he signed a one-year extension that will last until 2025. Atlanta has performed amazingly in those years. He has 735–585 over nine-plus seasons, seven straight winning seasons, six straight NL East wins (only just interrupted), and a 2021 World Series ring. And if he goes, who can be his replacement? Heyman picked one name, “Walt Weiss.” He is the current bench coach for the Atlanta Braves and was also the former manager of the Rockies.
Well, time will tell who will stay, who will bid goodbye, and who will become the new skipper. But these aren’t the only managers Jon Heyman talked about. There are more on the list.

Heyman provided a clear analysis of the MLB managers on what will happen once the season ends. And in that retirement list, he has yet another name, and it’s Ron Washington. Heyman said, “Ron Washington wanted to continue managing, but the health situation.” And the team’s caution makes it hard to believe that he will come back after his current tenure finishes.

Earlier this season, Ron felt shortness of breath and fatigue during a road series against the Yankees, which might lead him to consider retirement. That’s not it.. Heyman highlighted the possible changes in the interim managers’ situations.
He talked about Don Kelly, who became interim manager on May 8, 2025, after Derek Shelton. By the season’s end, his contract with Pittsburgh will run out, but Heyman is sure “he will stay” because he’s “doing a terrific job, and I think the players like him very much. Had a great rep going in.” The team has recorded 52 wins by August 15 under his leadership.
Next, Warren Schaeffer took over as interim manager of the Rockies in Colorado. Heyman thinks “there’s a good chance that Schaeffer will stay.” The Rockies are known for being stable, so they want to retain him after the season ends.
Tony Mansolino, another interim pick, took over the Orioles’ dugout as 2025 went on. Heyman thinks that Baltimore will start a formal search, but he also thinks that Mansolino’s good play will keep him “in the mix” until his current contract comes to an end.
