As fans, we tend to view players as invincible, scrutinizing every swing of the bat and every catch in the outfield under an unforgiving spotlight. They are often seen as larger-than-life figures—strong, fearless, and always in control. Fans cheer for their home runs and incredible catches, but it’s easy to forget that behind the bright lights and roaring crowds, these athletes are human too. They face struggles just like anyone else, though they rarely show it. That’s why Jarren Duran’s story feels so different—and so important.

The Boston Red Sox outfielder has been making waves on the field, but recently, he opened up about something far more personal: his battle with mental health. In Netflix’s documentary The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox, Duran shared the painful truth about his struggles during the 2022 season, including a s*****e attempt that shook him to his core. It was a raw and honest look at the pressure athletes face—not just to perform but to live up to impossible expectations while dealing with their own inner challenges. Duran’s decision to share his story has sparked conversations far beyond baseball.

It’s not easy to talk about something so personal, especially in a sport where toughness is often seen as staying silent. It’s this act of courage—this willingness to turn personal anguish into a beacon for others—that has drawn admiration from unexpected corners. Among those who have taken notice is Ben Verlander, brother of MLB legend Justin Verlander and a prominent voice in baseball media.

Ben took to his X handle to express heartfelt admiration for Duran’s courage in speaking out about his mental health struggles. In a poignant post, Ben Verlander wrote, “Wow. No words. So brave of Jarren Duran to open up about his mental health and s*****e attempt in 2022. Duran said he’d be standing in the outfield at Fenway, and people were screaming at him to “Go back to AAA.” All the while thinking he wanted to take his own life.” This powerful acknowledgment highlights the immense bravery it takes for athletes like Duran to confront their demons publicly, inspiring others to do the same.

There was a time in Duran’s life when he thought maybe ending his life would ease his pain. It was the time when Duran was struggling with his transition from second base to center field, and fans didn’t help either. In fact, they made it worse for them, telling him to end his life. He recounted sitting alone with a rifle and bullet in hand, pulling the trigger only for the gun to misfire. In that chilling moment, he realised it was a sign from God. And indeed it was. It became a turning point, pushing him to confront his pain and begin a journey of healing.

Reflecting on Duran’s raw honesty about the most painful time of his life, Ben emphasized the importance of choosing empathy over hatred, reminding everyone that life is full of ups and downs—victories and failures—and both must be embraced as part of the human experience. He also stressed the need for individuals to care for their own mental health while supporting those around them, echoing Duran’s courageous example of vulnerability and strength.

Ben has long held Duran in high regard. Just this February, he lavished praise on the Red Sox’s offense, labeling it an “A+ offense,” with special recognition for Duran, Alex Bregman, and Rafael Devers. And, after Duran’s candid revelations about his mental health struggles, Ben’s admiration for him only deepened.

Duran’s story isn’t just about what he went through—it’s about how he recovered. One thing he realised from the harsh criticism by fans is that players aren’t zoo animals. No matter how rough it gets on the diamond or how terrible to hear your name booed by an entire stadium, nothing is more important than your mental health. Baseball is often seen as a tough, competitive sport, but that’s why it’s even more important for players to speak up and seek help.

This is why Duran keeps daily journals—they help him stay reminded of the importance of prioritizing his mental health. And the entire Red Sox team “continues to stand with him.” Manager Alex Cora revealed that ever since learning about Duran’s struggles, he has made sure Duran knows he always has someone to talk to. “I’ve been giving him support, love. I’m somebody that he can talk to. That door’s always open. The relationship has grown throughout the years. Obviously, a lot of private conversations about the subject,” said Cora.
