The 2025 MLB All-Star Game had everything, like fireworks on the Fourth of July. From drama and history to a finish no one saw coming. For the first time, the Midsummer Classic ended in a 6-6 tie and was decided by a Home Run Derby tiebreaker. But while fans were locked in on that, the Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez was dealing with a far less thrilling moment.

In what could have been his All-Star showcase, Eugenio Suárez found himself the target of a scary hit by a pitcher. The up-close clip of which could leave even the non-jumpers flinching. It happened early in the game when Suárez stepped in against the Chicago White Sox rookie Shane Smith. A ball came roaring towards him and hit him on the pinky. The spot where a fracture is highly likely!

And Suárez just let go of his bat, wincing in pain. But thankfully, the imaging didn’t reveal anything alarming.

Jon Heyman updated that “Suarez was removed from the HR derby due to his finger being injured by the HBP. X-rays were negative, and he said he’s relieved.” Interestingly, though, this is not the first time Smith has hit Eugenio Suárez. He hit Suárez with a pitch back in June, causing him to miss time. And the rookie now sits near the top of the league in HBPs with 10 on the season.

As far as Suárez goes after that freak accident, he stayed in the game and made a defensive play in the ninth inning. So he did have gas in his tank. But when the NL selected its three hitters for a swing-off that followed the tie, Suárez was absent. Turns out it was his own call. He had opted out simply out of caution, and it makes sense.

Suárez is widely considered one of the most valuable trade chips. Not just for the Yankees, but the Mets, Cubs, and Tigers. So, any injury this close to the deadline could send plans spiraling. Bronx fans, in fact, went berserk over the White Sox rookie because of his error.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Shane Smith's wild pitch cost Suarez his All-Star moment, or was it just bad luck?

Have an interesting take?

But other than this, D-Backs 2B made history in the All-Star Game.

Ketel Marte makes history with RBI double in 2025 MLB All-Star Game

While Eugenio Suárez’s injury had fans on edge, another Diamondback was making headlines in the best way possible. Ketel Marte, Arizona’s second baseman, delivered a moment that will go down in the franchise’s books. With Ohtani and Ronald Acuna Jr. on base, he laced a 98 mph pitch from Tarik Skubal down the right field line, driving both runners home. This was historic!

That double made him the first player in Arizona Diamondbacks history to record multiple RBIs in an All-Star Game. It’s a first since Luis Gonzalez in 2005, when he managed to notch an RBI at all in the All-Star Game. Marte had gone 1 for 2, grounding out in his second at-bat before exiting in the fifth when Corbin Carroll and Suárez took over. This was his second back-to-back All-Star appearance, and he has proved his worth.

He got the most fan votes of any NL player, too. And even though he missed a month due to injury, since being back, he has not missed a beat. He is slashing .290/.394/.567 with 19 homers, 13 doubles, and a .961 OPS this season. Plus, his 165 wRC+ puts him 65% above league average. Talking about his journey, Marte expressed, “This is a blessing from God…. When you arrive here and you’re humble, you work hard, and things are going to work out well for you.”

Marte is signed with Arizona till 2030. And now it seems like the D-backs are in good hands for years to come. Plus, he is an All-Star record holder now.
