For Derek Jeter, there is no debate. As Team USA faced off against Venezuela in the 2026 WBC final, we saw a glimpse of a war of words between the New York Yankees’ past and present.

“I think the people that say [the WBC] is bigger than the World Series, never played in a World Series,” Barstool Sports quoted Derek Jeter.

The Yankees’ 5x World Series winner took a dig at the critics, placing the WBC above the World Series. And that also included the Yankees’ current captain, Aaron Judge.

Teams get into the World Series after winning a 162-game grind in the MLB regular season and then pushing through the postseason games. But the WBC is a short-term tournament. Each team plays four to seven games, with each playing 4 games in the Pool Play round.

As the top two teams from each pool advance, the knockout stage begins. The final eight teams play in a single-elimination bracket (quarterfinals, semifinals, and final). The ones who reach the finals play 7 games in total (4 Pool Play + 3 Knockout).

Team USA reached the WBC final in just about a week, but in MLB, the Yankees took about 8 months to reach the World Series in 2024.

Per Derek Jeter, the grind that goes into securing a World Series or a WBC final berth says a lot about which one is important.

The World Series holds greater anecdotal significance than the WBC. The first World Series game was played back in 1903, and the first WBC was played in 2006. That 100-year difference shows the World Series’s influence, creating generations of memories, iconic moments, and a deep cultural footprint.

We have even seen Series wins after a 106-year drought (2016 Chicago Cubs). In 1956 WS Game 5, pitcher Don Larsen of the New York Yankees threw a perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. It was the only no-hitter till the 2022 World Series, when the Houston Astros’ pitching staff of Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressly threw a perfect game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“When you retire, they ask ‘how many championships did you win?’ for a reason,” Jeter added further.

Every time a debate between Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge happens, the most obvious question that comes to mind is the number of World Series titles. Despite Aaron Judge having better hitting stats than Ohtani (.294 vs .282 BA), the absence of a World Series title trails Judge in the race.

Now, after Jeter’s remarks and with Aaron Judge having 0 ring in his crown, this felt pointed toward Captain America’s comment before the WBC finals.

“I’d say it’s been bigger. The World Series I was in, the crowd here, the crowd we had when we played against Mexico, it’s bigger and better than the World Series. As I said, the passion that these fans have representing their country, representing some of their favorite players, there’s nothing like it.”

The USA vs Mexico Pool Play game reportedly witnessed 41,628 fans at Daikin Park in Houston. It was a huge television success, too, with over 5 million viewers, setting a record as the most-watched World Baseball Classic telecast ever. The game was a sellout with standing-room-only, with a pro-Mexico crowd outnumbering the Stars and Stripes in a “sea of green, white, and red.” The rowdy atmosphere could be felt through the air.

But even that number was less than that of the 2024 World Series games.

Per reports, a total of 253,104 fans attended the series over five games. The average attendance per game was 50,621.

Yet, for Aaron Judge, it’s more about facing a more intense crowd, fueled by national pride. For Jeter? Nothing comes first over grind.

Jeter stands for winning through a tougher grind amid the WBC debate

While Derek Jeter is surely not against the WBC, he remains unapologetic toward grinding for victories.

During the Fox Sports’ WBC broadcast, Jeter was caught in his car with his daughters.

“You give out trophies to everybody. You got to win, you got to win,” Jeter said in view of the recent trend of offering participation trophies.

For Derek Jeter, trophies are meant only for the winners, and not everyone can be victorious. Winning and grinding to win stand prime for Jeter, and that clearly defines his stance in the WBC vs. World Series debate. In his 20-year career, Jeter, himself, won 5 WS titles (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009).

Winning the World Series comes after taking on the competition for about eight months, while the WBC is a 2-week show. Probably, that’s why, even without a WBC title (participations: inaugural version of 2006, and as a captain in 2009), Derek Jeter doesn’t have any regrets.

However, that surely does not demean a WBC win.

Taking on the best and strongest roster of international teams and winning for the country comes with a patriotic flavor. And that’s what differentiates the WBC from MLB.
