It’s time for the Blue Jays front office to call “mayday” three times, and why not? The team is already suffering from a long list of injuries. Half of the rotation includes Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Jose Berrios, who are yet to make a return from the Injury List. Catcher Alejandro Kirk, too, is out with an injury, and now the latest news is much harder for the fans.

Veteran George Springer is out!

“George Springer (toe) placed on 10-day IL. Eloy Jimenez was recalled from Triple-A by the Blue Jays,” Underdog MLB shared via X.

It is the worst the Blue Jays could have expected.

They lost to the Twins by 4-7 on Saturday, but beyond that, fans got stung more by Springer leaving the field in the middle.

In the third inning, he fouled a grounder off his foot but still completed his at-bats. But how he left the field was scary for the fans. It was just a hint about what was about to come.

After attempting to play through it, he was replaced by a pinch hitter (Myles Straw) before his spot in the lineup came up in the 6th inning.

The latest update is that he fractured his left big toe. That means a minimum of a 10-day Injury List that could even get extended. And that’s enough to alter the entire offense buildup of the Jays.

“It will look a little bit different if George is not in there, obviously,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider noted. “We’ll kind of figure it out day by day if he’s not there.”

The Blue Jays have called up DH/LF Eloy Jiménez to replace George Springer. The 29-year-old posted 2 HR, 3 R, and 5 H through 18 games with Toronto during Spring Training. The team would now shift to a ‘next-man-up’ approach, bringing up Nathan Lukes and Davis Schneider into leadoff roles.

While the Jays’ $150 million slugger had yet to showcase his best this year, his presence acted as leadership for their offense.

Springer entered Saturday batting .189 with 2 HRs and six RBIs. Nothing special, but he was last year.

George Springer finished off 2025 hitting .309 with 32 HRs and 89 RBIs in the regular season. Remember his decisive homer in Game 7 of the ALCS against Seattle! That’s what the Jays would miss now.

“We’ll know more in the next couple of days,” Schneider added.

Even though a 10-day IL is confirmed, everything depends on the MRI. And what’s worse is how the team is already reeling under loads of injuries.

They are currently ranked 4th in the AL East with a 6-8 record. Surely not expected from the 2025 World Series finalist, but the injuries made the Jays trail even behind teams like the Orioles.

Toronto’s injury list has nine names till now. Other than the starters, veteran Anthony Santander and outfielder Addison Barger are also on the list. Additionally, Cody Ponce’s comeback game in MLB was also cut short within three innings, and he is also in the IL.

The Jays’ stuffed offense is yet to deliver

Alejandro Kirk is out with an injury, and now Springer is also sidelined. But apart from them, the stacked lineup of the Blue Jays has names like Kazuma Okamoto, Jesus Sanchez, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Still, in the first 12 games this season, the Jays were ranked 19th in terms of wRC+ (93). This proves that despite Springer’s presence in the lineup since the 2026 opening day, they didn’t perform.

For reference, George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Daulton Varsho, Alejandro Kirk, Addison Barger, and Nathan Lukes were there with the team last year.

They collectively hit .274/.348/.473, good for a 128 wRC+ in 2025. However, this year, these six are hitting a .177/.282/.285 line, for a 68 wRC+. That’s some unreal downfall for the Blue Jays’ core.

Especially for Springer, the downfall between 2025 and 2026 is more evident. He scored .309/.399/.560 for a 166 wRC+ last year. That came down to .184/.273/.367 for a 89 wRC+ in 2026.

Hence, considering this stat, Springer’s absence should not affect the team largely, but his leadership will be missed. Remember how he recently took the fight to the Dodgers by complaining about Shohei Ohtani’s delayed start. That’s something the Blue Jays lineup would miss now.

It’s up to Schneider now to steer the team through this rough phase.
