There are several wrongs accumulated for the Yankees this season. Be it their muted offense or bullpen meltdown, the Yankees are struggling to secure their playoff berth with just another 18 games left this season. Meanwhile, there are a few historic lows witnessed by the bleacher creatures this season, like getting swept by the Blue Jays in late June to winning only 2 games out of a total of 10 against the Red Sox in 2025. But is it all that defines the Yankees currently?

Watch What’s Trending Now!

At least one Blue Jays broadcaster thinks so. Just after the Yankees went down by 12-2 against the Tigers, a hard jibe came up from the Jays’ broadcasting booth. “You know, the Yankees. They’re not a good team. I don’t care what the record is. They have a lot of wild pitches. They make a lot of mistakes in the field. And they don’t run the bases very well. If they don’t hit home runs, they don’t have a chance to win.” Standing with an 80-64 record and 3 games behind the table topper, the Blue Jays, is not what the typical Yankees are expected to be.

But while the numbers might suggest they’re struggling badly, it’s not bottom-of-the-barrel bad!

The Yankees are not as bad as being said

The Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009. That’s why fans often say today’s Yankees just aren’t the Bronx Bombers of old. But if you actually look at the numbers, the picture is a little different.

For instance, since that 2009 title, only one team, the Dodgers, has racked up more wins than the Yankees!

Now, take the Astros, for example.

They’ve won a World Series during this stretch, but overall, they’ve still won fewer games than New York. So, what does that really say?

If you’re counting rings, the Yankees are definitely coming up short. But in terms of performance, they’re not hitting the elite standard fans expect, yet they’re far from the bottom-feeders some make them out to be!

The stats say otherwise

Right now, the Yankees sit at the top when it comes to scoring runs, 749 to be exact. Sure, there was that ugly stretch between June 10–17 when they couldn’t get anything going, scoring five or fewer runs with a brutal .462 OPS or worse over five games. But they bounced back in a big way and are now leading the league in offense.

Take home runs, for instance.

The Blue Jays broadcaster said the Yankees can’t win if they’re not hitting homers! And that’s probably because they lead the league with 243 home runs. Walks? Again, the Yankees are first, drawing 557 so far. RBIs? Sitting near the top with 724. Even on the pitching side, they’re no slouch, fifth in strikeouts (1,278) and fourth in opponent batting average (.230). These aren’t the stats of a bottom-tier team.

Then what’s the issue?

A lot of it comes down to fielding. Fox Sports has the Yankees ranked 25th in fielding percentage at .984, and Anthony Volpe alone has 19 errors, leading the AL division. Add in their inconsistency and occasional late-game meltdowns, and suddenly those close games start slipping away. The result?

A team fighting for a playoff spot instead of cruising into one. But calling them a bad team might not be fair. The talent and production are there, it’s just not translating to wins when it matters most.
