The former four-weight class champ Mikey Garcia came straight on the undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez over the latter’s remark about not fighting his countryman.

Speaking to FightHype.com, Garcia said, “It’s the sport of boxing. It ain’t about you know fighting your countrymen. I think that when the right circumstances are present. You got to do it.”
Undoubtedly, Garcia is right, but in the sport of boxing, fighters’ own opinion matters a lot. So if Alvarez did not want to face his countryman, it was his stand.
The Mexican Icon has not secluded his range of opponents earlier, but now his eyes are only on fighters who did not belong to his country.

If you notice, the ladder that he climbed to make it to the top involves many Mexican opponents he faced. The recent one was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, whom he faced in 2017 and finished the bout by decision win.
As of now, he is all set to face the unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on September 17 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This is a trilogy battle that GGG was demanding from Alvarez for years after losing twice in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The bouts they fought earlier were very close, so they decide to meet the third time.
What did Canelo Alvarez say about not facing Mexican fighters?
Alvarez said this in response to whether he wanted to face unbeaten Mexican Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez or not. Notably, Ramirez is set to face Canelo’s former opponent Dmitry Bivol on Nov 5 in Abu Dhabi. So if Ramirez wins, then there was a possibility that Canelo could face him. But the Mexican turn down this saying that he is not interested.
“If it’s Zurdo, I don’t want to fight with Mexicans… I represent Mexico. I think Zurdo has a chance to win, and I want him to win,” Canelo told USA Today.
