From Seoul to Sawgrass, the rise of Si Woo Kim

Born on Jun 28, 1995, in Seoul, South Korea, Si Woo Kim was set on a path for success in golf at a very young age. His father, Kim Doo-young, played a significant role in helping him develop his skills when he was young. His mother was also very supportive in helping him move to Thailand so that he could get better training.

Kim completed his schooling at Sinsung High School in Anyang City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He pursued further education at Yonsei University, where he also competed at the collegiate level in golf.

He continued his impressive run of form in the big leagues as well. In his first season, Kim managed to get five top-10 finishes, which included a runner-up in the Barbasol Championship. He also won the 2016 Wyndham Championship that season, being the youngest to do so at 21. A year later, he won The PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

All through this time, his partner, Ji Hyun Oh, was always by his side. She has been present behind the ropes and also carried his bags in a few events. Kim has received a lot of support from his wife throughout his journey.

Like two peas in a pod

Si Woo Kim and Ji Hyun Oh had identical journeys through their youth. She too progressed through the ranks as an amateur golfer. In fact, like her husband, Oh also enjoyed a glorious career before turning pro.

Seven years older than her partner, she already had a lot of experience as a pro when she met Kim. In fact, she was a two-time LPGA Tour champion when they met. But it was easy for them to get along since they both had a South Korean background.

After Kim’s first win post their marriage, he had said, “She walked with me the whole time, and she gave me so much strength. There were some tense moments, but I was able to smile and relax whenever I saw her along the ropes.”

Moreover, as Kim was rising through the ranks, Oh was winding up her career. So it was easier for her to shift the focus from her journey to their relationship and his career. That’s probably what helped Si Woo Kim and Ji Hyun Oh build a great connection.

After their marriage, her words spoke about choosing family over competitive golf.

“I will now be Kim’s wife, rather than a professional golfer. When we were dating, we had to spend so much time apart from each other. Now that we’re married, I don’t have to worry about being away from him. This is the happiest moment of my life.”

As Kim takes the next big step in his life now, the couple is also raising their son, Theo, together.
