Essentials Inside The Story

  • Tiger Woods spent eight hours in jail for his latest DUI charge.
  • President Trump showed his concern for Woods when he landed in Miami on Friday afternoon.
  • Woods has previous DUI charges against him.

Jupiter Island, Florida: Tiger Woods was arrested Friday afternoon after causing a rollover crash. He was supposedly returning to his home after a golf session when the incident occurred. According to Florida laws, he had to spend at least eight hours in the county jail before being released later in the night.

Around 2 pm yesterday, Woods tried to overtake a pressure-cleaner truck with his Land Rover. To avoid a collision on the two-way road with a 30 mph (48 kph) speed limit, he swerved his car back but clipped the back end of the truck, rolling his car over. He was able to crawl out of the passenger door without any major injuries. The truck driver is also uninjured, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek noted that Woods appeared very lethargic and showed signs of impairment. Officers administered a Breathalyzer test that came out with a 0.00 reading. Florida’s laws also require driving license holders to undergo breath, urine, and blood tests, but Woods refused to take the urine test.

“They believe from on scene that he was not impaired by alcohol; they believe that it was some type of medication or drug,” Budensiek said. “He was lethargic on scene but that we believe was because of what he was intoxicated on.”

Woods was charged with two misdemeanor counts: for refusing the urine test and for property damage. He was held in custody until around 11 p.m. ET. when he was released. Woods was seen leaving the premises, sitting on the passenger seat of a car. The officers described Woods as “cooperative but not trying to incriminate himself.”

Budensiek further added, “Of course, he did explain the injuries and surgeries that he had. We did take that into account, but they did do some in-depth roadside tests, and when it was determined, he was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County Jail.

“He’s not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did,” he said. “He’ll pay the price, but he’s not going to pay the price by getting punished in jail.”

Tiger Woods might face a suspension of his driver’s license. However, there is no certainty on the matter yet. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, whose former daughter-in-law is dating Woods, landed in Miami on Friday afternoon for an investment summit and showed his concern when he was asked about the golfer.

Oddly enough, a picture from the scene obtained by Associated Press showed him wearing a golf polo, indicating he might have been coming from a range session. Neither Woods’s family members nor his agents have released a statement yet. This incident comes just days after his emotional return to professional golf in the TGL finals.

Woods’ return to the green and his previous legal troubles

Woods returned from his injury for the first time to play for Jupiter Links Golf Club in Game 2 of the TGL Finals on Tuesday, March 24, at the SoFi Center, where his team lost eventually in a 9-2 blowout against Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC).

He has also registered himself for the U.S. Senior Open later this year, to keep himself eligible for the senior major. Woods has been grappling with a ruptured Achilles tendon and a back surgery in October 2025.

“As I said, I’ve been trying,” Woods said. “Just this body, it doesn’t recover like it did when it was 24, 25. It doesn’t mean I’m not trying. I’ve been trying for a while. I’ve had a couple bad injuries here over the past years that I’ve had to fight through and it’s taken some time. But I keep trying. I want to play. I love the tournament.”

But now, after this recent accident, the uncertainty has only increased around his healthy comeback to any kind of golf return. Tiger Woods nearly lost his leg in a rollover crash in 2021 in California, caused by driving nearly double the speed limit. And he was in a single-car crash backing out of his driveway at his Orlando-area home in 2009.

The crash resulted in open fractures to his right tibia and fibula, requiring emergency surgery with rods, screws, and pins. It nearly caused amputation and forced a 15-month recovery. Though Woods didn’t retire after the incident, he has never been the same since.

Since the 2021 crash, Woods has played a very limited schedule, struggling with continued health issues, including further back surgeries.

Woods was also arrested in 2017 on charges of driving under the influence in Jupiter. He was found asleep in his car, which he later said was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication. He agreed to pay a $250 fine and was later released.

The latest incident, although not as severe as past instances, once again puts the 15-time major champion in a difficult spot.
