22 hours ago, the PGA Tour announced that Scottie Scheffler withdrew from the Texas Children’s Houston Open. Sources close to him have cited the imminent birth of his second child—and not any injury—as the actual reason for his abrupt exit. Putting family over career is routine stuff from Scheffler, but this withdrawal update is significant for two reasons.

Firstly, Scottie Scheffler is far from his elite self, and the Texas Children’s Houston Open, a tune-up to the Masters, would’ve offered the chance to shake off that rust. Secondly, it’s unlikely that Scheffler will tee off at next week’s Valero Texas Open either. Landing at Augusta with almost a month’s gap will be a first for the two-time Masters champion. And our analysis shows it might just backfire. Look at this interesting trend:

Here is what it means: a pre-Masters tournament has been crucial in Scheffler’s success in the first major of the season—a key reason 18 of the world’s top 50 are teeing off at Memorial Park this week. On top of it, Scheffler crawled to a T22 at the 2026 Players Championship, his second straight finish outside the top-20. Notably, in three back-to-back tournaments, the World No. 1 failed to break par in the opening round. He has also sounded unusually salty when being quizzed on his drop in form.

While Scheffler has skipped a pre-major event before, the situation was markedly different. He finished T8 at the 2024 PGA Championship despite coming back to the greens after a month-long gap. Scheffler took a break at that time to be close to his wife, Meredith, during the birth of their son, Bennett. However, he had four wins by that time compared to his one win and only two top-tens this year.

His recent withdrawal from the Texas Children’s Houston Open has opened the door for Matt Kuchar to enter the field. Scheffler is the seventh person to pull out of the $9.9M PGA Tour event after Austin Smotherman, Cam Davis, Ryo Hisatsune, Michael Kim, Matt McCarty, and Bud Cauley.

Scheffler’s decision may have surprised many, but it aligns with a pattern he has consistently maintained throughout his career. He always places family above everything else. That mindset is deeply tied to the role his wife, Meredith, plays.

While it’s easy to believe that Scheffler’s command of the greens and his ability to stay consistent stem from the effort he puts in, the man himself says that it is not a solo journey. The World No. 1 has repeatedly highlighted that his wife’s steady presence keeps his game and mindset on track.

“I feel like Mere has always been really good at telling when something’s off in my head and trying to bring that out of me, which we’re still continuing to figure out,” the 29-year-old said in March.

The couple has been together since their teenage years. Meredith has spent a significant portion of her life on the road with Scottie Scheffler. And the two-time Masters champion has acknowledged that doing so requires a lot of sacrifices. He says that his wife provides emotional balance, which helps remind him that his performance does not define who he is.

“I’d much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. At the end of the day, that’s what’s more important to me,” he has said previously.

At the 2024 Masters, Scheffler said he would withdraw even if he was in contention in the final round to be with his wife, Meredith, who was pregnant with Bennett at that time. Now, having a second child means that giving time to his wife and children becomes even more important. It also explains why stepping away from the competition was never a difficult choice for him. Notably, Phil Mickelson carried a beeper with him at the 1999 U.S. Open while his wife, Amy, was in labor.

That family-first mindset brings clarity to his withdrawal from the 2026 Texas Children’s Houston Open. Now, only two weeks remain for the Masters. Scottie Scheffler is stepping back and choosing what matters more before returning to chase another green jacket.
