Essentials Inside The Story
- 36-year-old golfer injured in an unexpected elevator accident
- The two-time DP World Tour champion required multiple surgeries
- He was staying in a private property near Cape Town
On Wednesday, news broke that the 36-year-old Italian golfer Andrea Pavan met with an accident. He was bound to make his next DP World Tour appearance at the South African Open at the 2026 Investec South African Open Championship. However, he was forced to withdraw.
The two-time DP winner was staying near Cape Town in a private residence, not owned or rented by the DP World Tour, before the event. When he called for an elevator, and the doors opened, the car was not there. Pavan fell three stories into the shaft.

The 36-year-old, who also teed off in two PGA Tour events last year, was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. His friends from Texas A&M told Golf Channel that he had to undergo extensive surgeries, including a major procedure. Matt Van Zandt, one of Pavan’s teammates, has created a GoFundMe page with more details.
Andrea Pavan had serious injuries to his back and shoulder and multiple fractures to several vertebrae. He will have to remain in the hospital for a long period, and doctors have ruled out any possibility of transporting him to the USA any time soon. His wife, Audra, has traveled to South Africa from Dallas, where the two live. His sister is also expected to be with them.
His former Texas A&M coach, J.T. Higgins, revealed that Pavan was in good spirits and was face-timing with his three kids after the surgery. No further reports have been released to reveal Pavan’s recovery timeline.
Pavan was scheduled to play at the 2026 Investec South African Open Championship. However, the accident occurred on Wednesday, which forced him to withdraw from the tournament. Following his withdrawal, Richie Ramsay was asked to take Pavan’s spot.

Only seven months ago, a similar incident in Detroit resulted in a fatality. Fortunately, Pavan, although badly injured, avoided a similar fate.
The golf community was shocked to learn about the report, sharing their best wishes for the two-time DP World Tour champion in the comments section.
Netizens share their prayers for Andrea Pavan’s speedy recovery
The entire incident took everyone by surprise, and fans couldn’t help but share their prayers for Andrea Pavan.
Shocked by the odd occurrence and the severity of the incident, one of the fans said, “Damn. I’ve seen that happen in NYC with a fatality. He’s lucky to be alive. Prayers out for a speedy recovery. 🙏🙏🙏” Someone wrote, “That is horrible news. Wish to see him out on the course soon and a speedy recovery.”
Pavan had been on a good run recently with a T14 finish at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and a T9 at the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship. However, not only will this accident pause his growth in golf, but with his vertebrae injured, he may need extended time to return to golf.
Reflecting on what Pavan might be going through, a comment read, “That’s horrible. Had to be terrifying for him.”
It’s impossible to imagine what emotions he might have gone through after realizing what happened just hours before he was supposed to tee up. However, the latest reports suggest that he is in good spirits.
One of the fans wrote, “Just awful news. Career already blighted by injury and had got back to playing some really good golf again too. Hoping he makes a full recovery. 🙏”
Pavan has been troubled with wrist injuries for the last five years of his career. That has hindered his form and performance since 2021, when he lost his DP World Tour card. However, he earned it back in 2024 and, as previously mentioned, was hoping to bounce back and get inside the winner’s circle. After the accident, though, it’s hard to imagine where his game will be when he can eventually return.
Another fan also said, “Oh my word. Hope Andrea is ok and recovers quickly – his comeback story has been one of the best things to watch in golf the last few years! 🙏”
As much as Pavan is in agony, so would be his family. And the fans did not forget about it. But indeed, towards the end of 2025, he secured a few great finishes. His T4 finish at the Genesis Championship was probably the most impressive one he has recorded over the last few years. Pavan has not won since 2019.
The only silver lining here is that Pavan is cheerful despite his harrowing accident. Hopefully, that mental fortitude will help him return to the green sooner than expected.
