Caddies are a tremendous help to the golfers. Scottie Scheffler would know the best seeing as how he has raked in so many wins this season, all with the help of his looper Ted Scott. However, being such a tremendous help to the professionals can only happen if they themselves have substantial knowledge about the sport. But do they excel at the sport themselves? Well, 1-time PGA Tour champ Michael Kim has some cents to give about that matter

Truly a valid question, for that is what a golfing enthusiast posed on his X handle. “Quick question for the golf space,” asked the user, “do ALL caddies also know how to golf ?” Just a couple of hours after the curious query was posed, Kim took to his social media handle to reply, Many THINK they know. Very few actually do.

Quite a daring thing to declare, one might assume, but true nevertheless. Back in March, Shawntae Wilson, a senior high school student at Bard High School in Baltimore, was able to earn a scholarship to the University of Maryland. She did so by leaping at the chance to help with the bags at Baltimore Country Club, after which she earned an award from the Evans Scholars program set aside for caddies.

While some instances showcase people turning to the bags despite never having played golf, there are cases where loopers excel in the sport as well. Enter Wyndham Clark’s caddie, John Ellis. “I’d take John Ellis any day,” replied Will Zalatoris’s bagman Joel Stock when asked about the best golfing caddie out there.

Drew Stoltz, Co-Host of “Gravy and the Sleeze,” was quick to agree with the PGA Tour Pro’s bagman. Moreover, he even dubbed Clark’s caddie as the “Best player to never have any status on a Korn Ferry or PGA Tour.” Michael Kim seemed to be spot on when he replied that only a few actually knew how to play the sport. Interestingly, for the 31-year-old, knowing how to play might come last, for the golfer had once fired his caddie for a peculiar reason.

Michael Kim once fired his caddie back in his amateur days

“At a prestigious amateur tournament,” wrote Kim back in 2022, “My caddy tried to sabotage my playing partners by making noise during their backswing.” He then divulged how the looper was trying to do so while the likes of Justin Thomas and Bobby Wyatt were in the middle of their shot. Although the then-amateur thought of it as an accident at first, his subsequent actions forced the athlete to take some drastic action

Michael Kim mentioned how “he was making noise with the peanut butter cracker wrappers,” before revealing how the American fired him after the round. Consequently, the host of the event took over in place of the ex-employee. Even Justin Thomas was surprised, for he replied, “Wtf!!!! I never knew this G.”

Regardless of the past incident, 1-time PGA Tour champ Michael Kim sure has managed to surprise everyone with his recent revelation. What do you think of his tweet? Do you feel caddies should know how to play golf as well?
