Essentials Inside The Story
- The Palm Springs event adds another name to its list of withdrawls
- Multiple players have left the American Express due to a mysterious illness
- Aberg had a similar issue last year
The pleasant weather at La Quinta wasn’t able to keep what seems to be an epidemic from happening. In the $9.2 million American Express, three names had already left before the third day. Now, Ludvig Aberg has also dropped out.

Underdog Golf tweeted yesterday, “Ludvig Aberg (illness) a WD from The American Express.”
So far, Aberg hasn’t shared any updates explaining the reason behind his exit. The 26-year-old was in a strong position to make the cut after finishing the first two rounds with a 9-under par score. A solid round on Saturday would have helped him get close to the top of the table. However, Aberg didn’t play a single hole in the third round and withdrew from the event before his tee time.
Since the pro golfers were paired with amateurs for the opening three rounds, former PGA Tour player Jeff Gove filled in to play for Aberg on Saturday so that his amateur had a partner.
Interestingly, Aberg was a late addition to the tournament, as confirmed by Pat McCabe, the executive director of the event. It would’ve been his first official PGA Tour event of the year since the Tour Championship in August last year.
Since this is the third round of the event, the field will be cut to 65 players plus ties for Championship Sunday. The cut for The American Express is at -11.

The same report regarding Luke Clanton’s withdrawal was released by the PGA Tour Communications approximately 24 hours ago. He left the event after his first round despite a decent 2-under par 70 start.
Rico Hoey also withdrew from the tournament due to a mysterious illness midway through his play on Friday. However, it is worth noting that his performance at the event could have been better. The world No. 71 finished with 5-over par 77 on the Stadium Course on Thursday. He tried to fight through it on Friday but only managed a 1-over par through nine holes.
The $9.2 million tournament had also seen Nick Dunlap’s exit due to an injury. The defending champion at the American Express did play on Friday, but struggled with his driver. He opened with 77 and sat at 7-over par for the week after two rounds.
Last year, around this time, Aberg had an illness that caused him to lose 10 pounds. He was in contention at Torrey Pines. So, instead of withdrawing, he played and had a 74-79 weekend. However, he had to take his name off his next start before returning for the Genesis Invitational, which he won.
That said, this isn’t a serious illness for Aberg, Clanton, or Hoey. They should be ready by next week.
Aberg, others remain in the field for the next tournament after withdrawals
Nick Dunlap is the only pro who withdrew from the 2026 American Express due to an injury. Hence, he still hasn’t confirmed his return to the PGA Tour yet. The 22-year-old has yet to reveal the severity of his injury. However, the likes of Ludvig Aberg, Luke Clanton, and Rico Hoey should be ready for action by next week. At least that is what the PGA Tour Communications confirmed.
All three individuals are a part of the field for the Farmers Insurance Open next week. They will join Brooks Koepka on his return to the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines.
It’s uncertain whether any of them will change their status in the event. Aberg had been confirmed for the field a day before he withdrew from the American Express. We will have to wait and see if he backs out of the Farmers Insurance Open as well. If he does, then Matt Kuchar will replace him at Torrey Pines.
