Three years and one FedEx Cup playoff run later, Theegala has come close to a strong finish multiple times. His best finish this season was a T6 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which earned him $702,000. But at the BMW Championship, a costly penalty at St. Louis held him off from a $106,000 paycheck.

The PGA Tour’s official account posted his brutal penalty moment on X with the caption, “The wait was almost worth it.”

Rightfully so. It is a reference to his tee shot on the 164-yard 13th hole, which settled 22 feet from the cup. What could have been a birdie putt found the edge of the hole and simply refused to fall for several long seconds. Theegala and his caddie stood over the hole, almost praying for it to fall fast, and it did, but a few seconds late. That turned a routine read into a rules situation nobody wanted to be a part of.

According to Rule 13.3a, when a ball overhangs the lip of the hole, a player gets a reasonable amount of time to reach the hole, and ten more seconds after that to wait it out. If the ball drops within that window, the stroke counts as holed. If it takes longer, as Theegala’s did, the player still holes out, but a one-stroke penalty gets added.

His would-be birdie turned into a par and a two-stroke swing on the scorecard. That meant an even-par finish instead of one under.

Had he not paid a hefty cost, he would have finished T37 instead of T41. Moreover, that delay had a direct dollar figure attached. Per Golf Channel’s published payout table for the 20 million prize purse, a tie for 37th was worth $106,000. But his actual finish, a tie for 40th, first paid $92,000. The mistake cost him $106,000.

That said, Theegala’s day had already moved both ways before the mistake. He opened his back nine with a birdie at the par-3 twelfth, giving him momentum heading into thirteen. The front nine had told a similar story of small gains and losses. He made a birdie at the par-5 fifth, offset by a bogey at the par-4 sixth. That was the pattern that defined his week: flashes of sharp iron play undercut by moments that cost him strokes he could not recover from.

Furthermore, Theegala had arrived at Bellerive sitting 46th in the FedEx Cup standings and needed something close to a top-three finish to crack the top 30 and advance to East Lake. A 41 kept his 2026 season out of the Tour Championship field, closing the door on any further FedEx bonus money this year. His PGA Tour card and signature event status for 2027 remain secure regardless, as he already sits inside the top 50.
