Back on January 7 this year, the PGA of America suffered quite a significant blow. With their CEO, Derek Sprague, stepping down within 11 months, the organization had a tough time managing its business. Thankfully, navigating through the murky waters, the front office seems to have found a glimmer of hope. In a recent breakthrough, the PGA of America came up with an all-important broadcasting update.

Such an extension means that the PGA of America has secured its broadcast partners’ services for an additional couple of years. Previously, the contract with both the USA Sports and the NBC Sports was scheduled to expire in 2031. Interestingly, the Ryder Cup for this year will be played in Spain. However, now, the coverage will also include the 2033 Ryder Cup competition, which will be played at the Olympic Club in S.F.

Interestingly, such news also holds historical significance. It points out the strong relationship that the PGA and the USA Sports have maintained between them. After all, the duo has been working together for 44 long years now, sticking through every major up and down. One of the historic moments includes the 1989 Ryder Cup coverage at The Belfry. Meanwhile, contrary to the positive news coming in, the PGA of America has faced a setback after the Rory McIlroy controversy.

PGA Tour cuts ties with PGA of America’s President after Ryder Cup controversy

In the last few months, the administrative sector of the PGA Tour saw several changes. And the changes are happening after Rory McIlroy and team Europe were subjected to a wild fan backlash in America’s Bethpage Black. This has further forced them to take up another massive decision. The PGA Tour has severed all ties with the PGA of America’s President, reportedly for the mismanagement of the situation that erupted in the 2025 Ryder Cup.

Don Rea became the 44th President of the PGA of America in 2024. Rea was elected for a 2-year term. But at the end of February 2026, the PGA Tour confirmed that Rea is no longer on the board of either PGA Tour Inc. or PGA Tour Enterprises. Rea had been replaced by Nathan Charnes, who was serving as the Vice President during Rea’s reign.

The mismanagement during the Ryder Cup sparked the controversy. While Don Rea was already under scrutiny, he did not come forward to acknowledge that the American crowd indeed misbehaved with Team Europe at Bethpage Black. Thus, such an outcome was a long time coming.
