When Patrick Reed left LIV Golf, he was prepared to serve a year’s suspension before eventually returning to the PGA Tour. So he wasn’t surprised to learn that the Tour set his date of return to August 2026. But as per the latest update, he might make a comeback much sooner than anticipated. All thanks to his current eligibility.

As Josh Lees from Bunkered tweeted, “Patrick Reed will be able to play on the PGA Tour sooner than you think. Thanks to his membership with the DP World Tour, Reed is eligible to play the co-sanctioned Genesis Scottish Open in July despite his suspension.”

After winning the 2026 Hero Dubai Desert Classic, Reed avoided paying fines to play in the DP World Tour. However, his exit from LIV Golf and commitment to Europe allowed him to avoid the complex dynamics between both Tours. Moreover, disassociating with the Saudi-based league also allows him to participate in the PGA Tour co-sanctioned event, the Genesis Scottish Open, in July 2026.

Notably, it would be the ideal event to participate in while preparing for the major that follows. The Scottish Open has often been the perfect setup for pros to prepare for The Open Championship.

Interestingly, it has been quite a while since the last time Reed played in the Scottish Open. He has only made three appearances an the event, with the latest one coming in the 2018 edition of the tournament. However, the tournament wasn’t co-hosted by the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour back then. It was solely played in the European Tour calendar. It only joined the PGA Tour schedule from the 2022 season onwards.

That said, Reed’s comeback is seen as a positive sign by many of his peers. Notably, even the World No. 1 commented on that.

Patrick Reed’s return has gotten most of his peers excited

There have been a few mixed reactions over the eventual return of Patrick Reed to the PGA Tour. However, most of the big stars have welcomed him back with open arms. Especially those who understand the impact this might have in uniting the best golfers in the world again.

Scottie Scheffler told the reporters in the presser for the 2026 WM Phoenix Open, “When you look at a lot of the discussions we’ve had and when you look at what a lot of the fans are saying, I think people want the best people playing together again.”

“So when it comes to great players like Brooks or Patrick Reed, Patrick Reed is a major champion, and I think Brooks Koepka has won five majors, so having those guys competing out here is great for the TOUR, great for the fans, and great for our sponsors,” he added.

While Rory McIlroy didn’t directly comment on Reed’s return, he has also shown support for former LIV Golf pros making a comeback. Having the support of two of the biggest players on the PGA Tour will certainly motivate Reed in his journey.
