Things are finally going Nelly Korda‘s way in 2026. After a disappointing season last year, where she performed well but went trophyless, the World No. 2 was yearning for a win. She joined the field at Lake Nona hoping to end her drought early. And the LPGA Tour has just gifted it to her by making a major announcement that nearly confirms her victory.

GOLF.com tweeted, “The LPGA has announced that the Tournament of Champions will be reduced to a 54-hole tournament, meaning Nelly Korda is in position to win the first event of 2026. She sits three shots ahead of Amy Yang who has two holes remaining in her third round.”

As the time of this announcement, Amy Yang is sitting at second spot, three shots away from Korda. She scored 10-under par in 52 holes before the third round play was suspended due to unplayable conditions. Apparently, it was too windy for the pros to continue playing the round after 4:18 P.M.

According to the weather report, the wind speed was at 20 mph with gusts going up to 40 mph. That made it impossible for Yang, Lydia Ko, and anyone else who was still playing to conclude their respective rounds.

Interestingly, Lake Nona was in playable condition on the morning of the Championship Sunday. To everyone’s surprise, the LPGA Tour had also decided to play the Celebrity round of the tournament before the pro round’s tee time. However, they ended up cancelling that as well.

Amy Rogers from the Golf Channel reported that the tournament was once again cut short due to weather issues. Reports state that the conditions were sub-freezing with temperatures falling to as low as 19ºF. That made it impossible for the pros to continue the tournament.

That said, Korda’s win will create a unique record in the event.

Nelly Korda is following her sister’s footsteps

Korda was at the top of the mountain at Lake Nona five years ago as well. Only that time, it was the world #2’s sister, Jessica Korda. Interestingly, it was Nelly Korda and Danielle Kang whom she was battling to win the $1.2 million event.

While the 15-time LPGA Tour champion didn’t get close to her sister back then, Kang pushed Korda to her limits in 2021. They were tied on the leaderboard after the regulation 72 holes.

As the contest went into a playoff, Jessica shot a birdie on the par-3 18th hole. That was enough to knock Kang out of the competition after only one sudden-death hole. Now, Nelly Korda is also going for the title this year. This will be the second title that both sisters will claim after both previously triumphed in the Women’s Australian Open.
