Cameron Young is no longer just a promising player; he has proven himself. The 28-year-old from Scarborough, New York, turned pro in 2019 after a standout college career at Wake Forest University. He spent years turning runner-up finishes into a strong reputation, with five second-place results in 2022 alone, including a solo second at The Open Championship. His first PGA Tour win came at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, followed by a dramatic four-shot comeback at the 2026 Players Championship that earned him $4.5 million. Behind his success are two people who supported him from the very beginning.

Who are Cameron Young’s parents?

Cameron Young was raised in Scarborough, New York, by David and Barbara Young. In their household, golf was central, not just a pastime.

David Young is a PGA Master Professional who led Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough for over two decades. He recently stepped down to focus on coaching Cameron. His experience extends to 18 years on the PGA of America’s Rules Committee and work at major tournaments, including the PGA Championship and the Masters.

Barbara is just as experienced. She played golf professionally for a while, then started a mini tour to help young women golfers compete. Later, she joined the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association. Even before all that, she caddied for Cameron at his first junior tournaments, taking care of travel, meals, and planning. When Cameron played his first tournament at age nine, she made her expectations clear:

“There was a practice round, and he was paired with a father and son, and the father was micromanaging this kid. I took him aside and said, ‘Cam, I’m your caddie. You’re the player. This is how it will be. Every decision is on you, but you can ask me what I think. But if you misbehave, I’m still your mom.'”

In 2023, the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association recognized the Young family as Family of the Year. The award ceremony took place at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.

Where did David and Barbara Young meet?

David and Barbara have not shared how or when they met. The family keeps their history private, and there is no public record of their first meeting or marriage date.

Both were involved in golf before Cameron. David was working at Sleepy Hollow. Barbara played at the amateur level. Golf was always the common ground.

That involvement continues in Cameron’s career. When caddie Kyle Sterbinsky was ill before the 2025 Travelers Championship, David took over. Cameron opened with a 65. When asked if Barbara could have caddied, Cameron was clear:

“I’m sure she would have liked me to. It would be fun, but I think my dad is just — he walks so many holes with me and knows the game so well that he can be an asset for me out there, where my mom is watching from a little bit farther away usually.”

She may stand farther away, but she is always present.

What ethnicity are Cameron Young’s parents?

The Youngs have always kept the focus on their golf journey, not their personal background. Beyond being of Caucasian ethnicity, there is little public information about their heritage, and that seems to be by design.

Cameron Young’s relationship with his parents

David and Barbara have stayed involved in Cameron’s career, not just tracking his results. David’s response to a poor round was always personal, not detached.

“If he plays well, there is not much to talk about. If he plays okay, we may chat about a few things. If he does not play how he wants to, that’s when I just let him vent for a while.”

After Cameron finished tied for third at the 2022 PGA Championship, a reporter asked David how proud he was. His response was typical.

“You know, that’s what everyone is asking me, how proud I am. I really don’t know how to answer that. I’m not a man with the right words, I guess. I’m not a writer. I’m much more of a numbers guy, a math guy. So maybe 12 out of 10?”

Barbara’s read on the bigger picture has always been steadier. Speaking ahead of the 2026 Masters, she said:

“Our family is very even-keeled. He’s very serious about his golf, but being a dad is more important to him. People don’t see that side. He keeps his family life pretty quiet and private, but he’s a great dad.”

A son ranked third in the world, a green jacket within reach, and two parents who have never once treated the numbers as the point.
