Justin Thomas is currently hitting all the right notes. The two-time Major winner last won a PGA Tour event in 2022 when he clinched the PGA Championship. Since then, it has been a topsy-turvy affair for the American golfer. But now he is picking up pace and gathering momentum as the crucial part of the season comes in.

Thomas is currently placed first in the leaderboard after two thrilling days of action at the RBC Heritage Open in the Harbor Town Golf Links in South Carolina. At 12-under par, Thomas is two strokes ahead of second place and looks comfortable despite a recent enormous change in his team. Wanna know what it is? Keep reading!

Thomas’ regular caddie, Matt Minister, had injured his back recently. So, instead, Thomas decided to team up with Max Homa’s former caddie and close friend, Joe Grenier. “Rev is resting up so he gets better soon, I’m very lucky Joe Greiner is a great friend and able to help me out last minute.” Thomas wrote on his socials before the Masters last week.

Speaking to the press, after two rounds of play at the RBC Heritage Open, Thomas was asked about how it felt with Joe Grenier as his bagman. He admitted that it was exciting. “It’s great. We’ve had a lot of fun. I think we — it’s hard because it’s — I always — have always thought caddies are in a tough spot already and kind of like a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation, let alone when it’s the second week he’s ever caddied for me.” The two-time Major winner explained.

This is Grenier’s second event as Thomas’ bagman. He also caddied for him at the Augusta National Golf Course. There, Thomas had finished T36 with a score of 2 over par. After a tumultuous 2024 season, Thomas has shown good consistency this year, finishing second at two events and making the cut at all 9 events he took part in.

He is now at the precipice of his first PGA Tour victory in three years, and he will need Grenier to be at his best.”He knows I’m playing well, and he knows that I feel the same way. So he’s wanting to help but also trying to not over-caddie. And it’s tough. But he’s doing a great job. It’s more fun than anything just because he’s got a great personality and sense of humor where I can make fun of him.” Thomas added.

Grenier’s addition and Thomas’ subsequent success aren’t a coincidence. Despite being a temporary appointment, Grenier comes with a whole lot of experience, having worked with Max Homa for several years before parting ways.

Joe Grenier’s caddie expertise with Max Homa

Grenier and Homa are childhood friends from Los Angeles. Grenier started caddying for the 6-time PGA Tour winner in 2013, splitting and then coming back in 2019. He has been a part of all six of Homa’s PGA Tour victories. He also caddied for him at two Presidents Cups as well as the 2023 Ryder Cup.

After what was a turbulent 2025 season, Joe Grenier and Max Homa decided to part ways. “Joe and I made memories for a lifetime and can’t be more thankful for all the hard work. We have parted ways and it will be sad to see him go. I’ll always be grateful to have walked the fairways with one of my best friends.” Homa explained in a statement.

It was a tough decision for the duo. The reason? The decision came after Homa missed four cuts in four straight events on the PGA Tour this year. “It’s hard. I’m just so used to him caddying, but I was happy that he did it. At the end of my days, we continue to be great friends than one of us resent the other for how hard this game can be on a relationship. So it sucks because I just pictured always walking fairways with Joe.” Homa added.

Ever since Grenier stepped down, Homa has competed in two events. He missed the cut for a fifth straight event at the Valero Texas Open before finishing an impressive T12 at the Masters this year. Homa is currently placed T57 at the RBC Heritage Open.
