John Daly is no stranger to viral moments. And he was recently involved in an incident that left fans in stitches. His latest stance at the Cologuard Classic forced him to step down the slope to save his ball. But the two-time major champion stunned spectators when he lost his footing on a steep desert slope at the sands of the Tucson club.

Daly, however, handled the chaotic moment in classic fashion. Sharing the clip on Instagram, the 58-year-old joked about his own tumble with a caption referencing the stunt show Jacka– and quipped, “now you see… me now you don’t,” embracing the humor of the situation.

Daly lost his ball on the rough, which forced him to step down in the sand. He tried to stand still and balance for a while. Finally, after taking a pause, he tried to take a shot. But immediately after hitting the ball, he tumbled straight into a native penalty area. He went out of view shortly after striking his shot.

After John fell, Joel Cooley rushed down the slope to help him up, and Daly later praised him for being a “true buddy sliding into save.” While Daly didn’t sustain major injuries and passed off the fall as a joke, the fall caused some concern among fans. John has a history of knee problems and a collapsed lung.

Still and all, on the scorecard, Daly was able to keep things together. He shot a 68 and tied for 29th while Steven Alker defeated Padraig Harrington in a playoff tussle.

Known for his tremendous driving distance, John Daly uses his instincts and raw athletic ability more than any other golfer to get ahead of his competitors. In fact, in terms of sheer talent or ability, John can easily be compared to other greats. It was about this relatability that arises out of his natural way of being that made Jack Nicklaus praise him. 

“John Daly doesn’t care what his golf clubs are. That kid picks up anything and goes hits it. Hits it great. He is a tremendous talent. He never worried about that. Watch what he does. You ask him, what is it. He says, ‘I don’t know, they just gave it to me,” Nicklaus said in 1996.

Clearly, many people love John Daly because they find him relatable. He may not have enjoyed the same amount of success as someone like Jack Nicklaus, but golf fans were drawn to him immediately because of his persona, particularly following his win at the 1991 PGA Championship.
