Essentials Inside The Story

  • Jason Day turns heads once again with his unique choice of outfit
  • Day isn't the only pro golfer who likes to show his fashion quotient in PGA Tour
  • Fans split on Day's outfit for the 2026 American Express

Remember the loud sweater vest Jason Day wore in the 2024 Masters as he left Nike for Malbon and the criticism that followed the choice? Well, history is repeating itself at the Pete Dye Stadium Course. Interestingly, though, this time, it is because the outfit is as lowkey as one can get.

In 2025, Day was asked by Augusta National to sport a more reserved look. Fast forward to 2026, he is following that rule in the first round of the 2026 American Express as he wore a basic black polo with Malbon’s camouflage pants. Adding more neutrality to the whole outfit were his plain white shoes and a black Motive visor.

Intrigued by the outfit choice, NUCLR GOLF asked the netizens to rate it by asking, “🚨🪖😲 #LOOK — Use one word/GIF to describe Jason Day’s fit.”

Historically, Day has sported some looks that have made everyone turn their heads. In the 2024 Masters, he wore a knitted sweater vest that featured “No. 313. Malbon Golf Championship” in large block letters across the front with a pair of baggy jeans. When he showed up for the second round later that day, he was without the vest as the officials had asked him to take the loud vest off.

“It’s good. I understand. We’re here for the tournament,” Day had said then.

The incident, however, did not reduce his fashion quotient whatsoever. The Australian-born again got everyone talking in last year’s Open Championship. On the Dunlace Course, he layered his polo with a collared sweater with a three-leafed Clover on the pocket, checkered pants, and a white Motive visor.

Camouflage pattern is nothing new on a golf course. Remember Rickie Fowler’s top-to-bottom camo look in last year’s WM Phoenix Open? In fact, GolfDigest’s Deputy Managing Editor, Stephen Hennessey, had quite a response to the criticism both the stars are receiving:

“People are acting as if Rickie and J-Day have been playing PGA Tour events in clown costumes,” Hennessey said last year. “Listen, I’d go to the range in sweatpants like Day wore at Pebble. So why not the course? And Rickie’s camo outfit is very extra, but if that’s your personality, maybe you’re comfortable in that. It might not be for you, but golf is finally getting cooler. Step aside as the cool kids go by.”

But, at least, these looks were quite fun, unlike how Day dressed up in this year’s debut. Netizens didn’t hold back on their views about the Australian veterans’ outfit. In fact, some also got quite creative with their comments.

Jason Day’s controversial outfit divides social media

There wasn’t a common theme in the comments section regarding Jason Day’s Malbon outfit in the first round of the 2026 American Express. Except maybe everyone was surprised by what the brand had chosen.

As someone wrote, “Somebody’s gotta tell Jason Day to put on some pants.” Playing along with Malbon’s attempt to disguise Day on the greens, they suggested that he wasn’t wearing any pants at all. The camouflage print probably blended into the grass really well for them to notice.

Offended by the fashion icon’s poor choice of attire, someone bluntly called it “Hideous.” The combination of camo pants and a black t-shirt is simply classic. You literally cannot go wrong with it. However, Day seemingly played way too safe and ended up worsening the narrative around him. In his defense, though, considering that Day is looking to break his winless streak, looking good might not be his top priority.

Not everyone was critical of Day’s fashion choice. Someone wrote, “Jason Day with some fire pants to start the year out #americanexpress #pgatour.” Unlike the time when fans accused him of disrespecting the 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, some are actually okay with what he wore. Certainly, at least the old pattern still included some current fashion inspiration with the baggy pants.

Someone suggested that he was wearing “Zubazz pants.” The brand the fan mentioned is quite well-known for its distinctive patterns. However, they are quite colorful as well. So, while Day’s outfit was just in camo colors and not the pattern, per se, someone confused it with Zubaz.

The round of compliments continued as a comment also read, “Badass!!” Unlike the solid colored outfits picked by other pros, Day’s brave attempt to make golf stylish seems to have impressed this fan.

It is interesting how Jason Day, while trying to return to his former days, certainly doesn’t fail to capture everyone’s attention. Whether positive or negative, brands only want their stars to promote the product. But did it work this time for Malbon?
