The golf world had only just begun to wrap its head around Tiger Woods’ recent car accident when his mugshot served another emotional shock. It was the middle of the afternoon on March 27, 2026, when Tiger Woods’ Range Rover clipped a pickup truck and tipped over in Martin County, Florida. He blew a .000, so officers pointed to medical impairment – a detail that, for many, echoed his past. But when the post-crash pic surfaced, the reaction shifted quickly from blame to concern.

Within an hour of golf_com posting the image on Instagram with the caption “Tiger Woods’ mugshot after being arrested for DUI today,” the post had already pulled in 11.7K likes and 1.5K comments. What stood out in those comments was not outrage but fear for a man who has had a well-documented struggle with pain medications, which was well-founded.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed that officers on the scene believed the impairment was not from alcohol after Woods passed the Breathalyzer test. But considering that he refused a urine test, the officers were led to believe some substances might have been at play, as Woods also appeared lethargic at the scene.

This is where history matters. In May 2017, Woods was found asleep at the wheel in Jupiter, Florida. Toxicology reports revealed Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien, and THC in his system. He explained he had been trying to manage pain from his fourth back surgery. However, he pleaded guilty to reckless driving, entered a diversion program, and eventually returned to win the 2019 Masters.

Sheriff Budensiek himself acknowledged, “This could have been a lot worse,” referring to the crash. And that’s exactly what fans felt after looking at his bloodshot eyes in the mugshot.

Fans flood the comments with one unified message

One fan commented, “He really needs help to stop the pain medication, probably. He’s been in pain for a long time, and I feel for him. But it never ends well, and I’m hoping he’ll turn it around.”

Woods began experiencing recurring back pain in 2013, which caused his worst-ever start to a PGA Tour season in 2014. He underwent surgery a week before the Masters. However, he had only played three tournaments in his comeback when he re-injured his back again. 2015 brought another surgery before the one in 2017 to fuse his lower back.

Then, in January 2021, the fifth surgery was announced, and only a month later, he suffered a single-vehicle rollover crash outside of Los Angeles. When 2025 rolled around, hopes were high, but they didn’t last long. Woods ruptured his left Achilles tendon and had a seventh back surgery to replace a disc in his lower back.

That level of surgical trauma comes with significant pain management, and for someone with Woods’ documented history with prescription drugs, the risk was always present.

Another fan wrote, “Prayers he seeks and achieves sobriety; his kids will appreciate him being 100% present.”

The golfer has two kids named Charlie and Sam, and while they have never publicly commented on his dependencies, the concern has surfaced at times. In 2022, when Woods was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame, his daughter, Sam, recounted the scary uncertainty of the 2021 crash, saying: “We didn’t know if you’d come home with two legs or not.”

“He blew a .00, so I have a feeling this is the result of pain meds,” read another reaction.

The concern is in the right place, considering that Woods’ history with medications began way before 2017. In 2009, Woods crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a tree close to a neighbor’s house outside his Isleworth home in Windermere, Florida. The collision also rendered him unconscious. When emergency personnel arrived, they discovered Woods inside the car, snoring and without shoes or socks. Later, it was revealed that he had been driving while under the influence of sleeping pills.

“Jesus, what a mess,” one reaction read.

With four major car-related incidents spanning 2009, 2017, 2021, and now 2026, the concern goes beyond a single moment. And for fans watching from the outside, this mugshot was not just another headline. It was a confirmation that the battle Woods has fought privately for years is far from over.
