Over the past year, Greg Norman and his breakaway tour have been a subject of debate. From PGA Tour pros to the public, everyone had opinions about all of LIV Golf’s and the two-time major winner’s moves. From trashing ‘the Shark’ to dissing the Tour, they dished out a lot of hate towards the new league. And now one of the oldest legends in the sport has joined in too. Gary Player just recently took down the Australian golfer by pointing at the real reason he joined the Saudi-backed tour.

Gary Player trashes Greg Norman

The golf community unquestionably reveres Player. The 87-year-old’s opinion is heard for anything and everything relating to the sport. Recently, in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, he revealed his thoughts about Norman and his tour of defectors. And boy, his words weren’t pretty to hear for the die-hard LIV fans!

Player claimed that the Australian golf great’s partnership with LIV stemmed from a long-time grudge he held against the PGA Tour. “Greg has basically had a vendetta against the PGA Tour for a long time,” he stated. “He wanted to start a world tour (in the Nineties) and was deprived of it.”

The nine-time major winner added that ever since Norman’s resentment for the Tour began growing, “He’s been a bit bitter about that,” he said. “I get along very well with Greg, but I think he has let it creep into some of these decisions, which I think is a pity.” The South African felt sorry for the Shark, for he had been driven by those emotions to side against the Tour.

Player’s opinion on former PGA Tour stars who jumped ship

During the interview, the golf legend also chimed in about his feelings about the defectors. “I don’t blame those who went,” he stated. “Most who left do not believe they can win on the regular tour any more.” He claimed that he certainly found the new league quite unappealing. “I don’t like 54-hole tournaments, nor the team side of it,” he stated.

Player, just like the rest of the golf world also believed that all the defectors jumped ship for the money. Being a Tour loyalist, Player firmly believed that those who left the Tour shouldn’t return. “I believe once you’ve decided that’s your tour, you should not be allowed to come back and play regular tournaments,” he stated.
