Essentials Inside The Story

  • PGA Tour veteran Jim Furyk is stepping into a new role
  • Furyk knows the course pressure better than most
  • Furyk's debut behind the mic could bring a sharper, more unfiltered tone

Another legend joins the lineup of experts at Golf Channel. Jim Furyk has enjoyed a distinguished career on the PGA Tour. He has 17 wins on the American circuit and one major. Now he’s going to bring his expertise behind the mic as a TV analyst.

As reported by Doug Ferguson of AP News, “Former U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk is testing the television waters as the lead analyst in the booth for Golf Channel during its weekday coverage of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and The Players Championship.”

The selections of tournaments are significant for more than one reason. Furyk has played the Arnold Palmer Invitational 13 times and The PLAYERS Championship 24 times in his career. He certainly knows the fairways at Bay Hill Golf Club and TPC Sawgrass better than many in the world.

On the other hand, his appearance at the 2026 PLAYERS will be more significant considering his history. Jim Furyk has two runner-up finishes at TPC Sawgrass, with the last one coming in 2019, when he finished one stroke behind the champion, Rory McIlroy.

With the Northern Irishman returning to TPC Sawgrass this year to defend the title, Furyk might be able to share some interesting stories about their 2019 duel. Interestingly, four years before that, McIlroy pulled off an almighty comeback against Furyk at the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship. So expect a lot of anecdotes and stories, and Furyk himself is pumped up.

“It will be nice to be on site, see some of my buddies and talk about something I’ve been doing for 30 years,” Jim Furyk was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Notably, this won’t be Furyk’s first rodeo as an analyst. Only last year, the 55-year-old joined the broadcast booth at the Ally Challenge. He was recovering from injury and couldn’t play on the Senior Tour. But his first stint, although a fun one, came at the 2004 PLAYERS, when he joined the booth while recovering from wrist surgery.

Jim Furyk has also never had any trouble on the mic when dealing with the media.

Will Jim Furyk’s media training help him in the commentary box?

Jim Furyk has always been known as a straight shooter in the press. He isn’t even afraid to call out his peers for their poor performance. He never accepted any misleading or poorly constructed statements by the media. In fact, the 55-year-old has even called out reporters for such misconduct.

Such an incident occurred during the 2022 Senior U.S. Open. Furyk missed the cut after delivering a poor performance in the first two rounds. However, the reporter still stated that he had a “solid week.”

Frustrated with the statement, Jim Furyk told them, “When I miss a cut, and you call it a solid week, I’ll be honest, it kind of p—-s me off,” as reported by Jamie Hall from Bunkered.

Golf Channel has a four-hour coverage window on Thursday and Friday for the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a two-hour window on Saturday and Sunday. At the PLAYERS, six hours of coverage on Thursday and Friday will air on Golf Channel. The weekend coverage from TPC Sawgrass will be on NBC.

Jim Furyk will join Terry Gannon in the booth. Notably, Golf Channel also brought in venerable Roger Maltbie earlier this year. The 74-year-old will also be an on-course analyst at Bay Hill and TPC Sawgrass.

Jim Furyk likes to stick to facts and reflect the true state of the situation. Tom Knapp, Golf Channel’s EVP and General Manager, lauded the veteran golfer’s “unmistakable passion” and “intensity” in everything he does. If he brings the same attitude to his analysis, then fans will certainly welcome it.
