When a golfer wins a PGA Tour event, he celebrates. And if it’s the Players Championship, which is debated to be the 5th major, the excitement and celebration are even greater. So, Cameron Young’s $4.5 million triumph at the Players Championship 2026 should have been a moment of unfiltered celebration. Instead, it sparked confusion.

“I wasn’t nervous too bad hitting the wedge shot, hitting the first putt, and then I put a line on my ball to try to aim it, and I could not get that thing pointed anywhere near the hole. I was all of a sudden really nervous. It doesn’t look like it in the video, but my hands are shaking pretty bad,” Cameron Young said on The Pat McAfee Show about his emotions in the final moments of the Players Championship 2026.

“It was an awful feeling. But, and maybe I should have waited until I could get it right, but at that point, I’m all in my head about it, and I just wanted to get it over with. And thankfully, I managed to take it from however far that was.”

Young described the birdie putt on 17 as the “game on” moment. That’s when he felt that the tournament suddenly became a head‑to‑head with Matt Fitzpatrick, who finished runner-up at the event. The two were tied before the final hole to play.

Fitzpatrick hit a bogey, and Cameron Young required a par score to win a $4.5 million paycheck. His tee shot covered 375 yards, followed by a 103-yard second shot. After the 3rd shot, his ball was only 16 inches away from the hole. He was able to finish on par comfortably to win the event.

After the putt, his reaction was very awkward. In the video, he appears almost emotionless. No big smile, no fist pump, just a brief exhale and a quiet walk to tap in. He was asked about it at the press conference after his big win.

“Generally, you’re not going to get a ton out of me, but it doesn’t mean that I’m not very, very happy to be sitting here with this,” he said at the presser.

The American professional revealed that he has a poker face. Although he was happy inside, it didn’t show on his face. In fact, he said that if someone were to ask his wife, Kelsey, she would say that he is a very happy person. He even called the shot on the 18th the best shot of his life. However, his face was as plain as it could be.

However, his comments on The Pat McAfee Show reveal the initial nervousness he felt before he hit the winning shot. The emotional buildup could have made it harder to muster a big emotional display. His reactions draw comparisons to former NBA star Kawhi Leonard, who rarely showed emotion after winning championships.

Although his face didn’t reveal it, winning the Players Championship was a big moment for Cameron Young. And it was not just because of the title and the financial rewards alone. He set some impressive records at the PGA Tour event.

Cameron Young Set 3 Records After Winning the Players Championship 2026

Young became the first Players champion to birdie the par-3 17th hole three or more times since Rickie Fowler in 2015. He missed the birdie in Round 1. But in the last three rounds, he birdied all of them. One of the most important of them was the Sunday birdie from a sand wedge that helped him tie with Matt Fitzpatrick.

Besides that, Cameron Young hit the longest 18th-hole drive in the ShotLink Era. His drive on the 18th hole in the last round was 375 yards. It is the farthest recorded on that hole since ShotLink started tracking data in 2004. His season average sits at 309.3 yards, which makes the 375-yard drive even more exceptional.

Another of his records was his four-stroke comeback on Sunday. It was the fifth-largest in the event’s history. Young started the last round four strokes behind the leader, Ludvig Aberg. He also tied with Chris Gotterup for the largest final-round comeback of the season. Gotterup made a four-stroke comeback at the WM Phoenix Open 2026.

Those record-setting moments highlight just how dominant Cameron Young’s performance was. Even if his reaction didn’t match the occasion, he would certainly be happy about it.
