Anything can happen at any time, and how much is that related to Hideki Matsuyama’s current situation? A lot, to say the least. With the St. Jude Championship around the corner, the golfer is ready for some redemption after a close call at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, after the horrifying news of him and his team, including the caddie and coach getting robbed hit the news, netizens have been skeptical as to what Matsuyama is going to do. Well, to their surprise, the bronze medalist is quite prepared.

In a recent X post by Golf Channel’s on-site reporter, Todd Lewis, everyone saw Matsuyama showcasing his exceptional skills at TPC Southwind in Memphis. The London robbery resulted in the theft of a few valuable items like wallets and passports, but it did not crush Matsuyama’s spirits. Although the golfer will not have his regular looper, Shota Hayato, will not be on his bag for the FedEx Playoffs because he has returned to Japan to obtain replacement travel documents, Matsuyama will have to adapt with Taiga Tabuchi on his bag, supporting him throughout the tournament.

Matsuyama expressed his gratitude that Tabuchi agreed to step in and revealed the relief he felt knowing that Tabuchi had caddied an amazing golfer like Hisatsugu Ryo. He said, “I’m glad he accepted. He’s worked with Hisatsugu [Ryo] this year, so I think he knows the ropes, and he can speak English, so I can rely on him.”

With his usual coach unavailable, Matsuyama is gearing up for the new challenge about to unfold itself at the tournament. Not having his coach by his side is also not bringing down the golfer, as he is determined to play the kind of golf he used to before his coach came around. Well, the golfer hasn’t performed his best at the previous tournaments, so can this new change in his team impact his overall gameplay?

Hideki Matsuyama’s previous FedEx Cup performances

Matsuyama’s previous performance has been, let’s just say, quite decent. Perhaps having some changes in his routine and gameplay and some new strategies won’t hurt his performance. To begin with, the golfer played with marvelous enthusiasm at the 2023 St. Jude Championship and scored 9 under par, just to land in the sixteenth position. And the future also didn’t bring good things for Matsuyama, as he withdrew from the 2023 BMW Championship, citing a painful back injury.

But what about his 2022 FedEx Cup performance? Well, that never took place as the golfer withdrew from the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship citing a neck injury. So, Matsuyama could do with a new guide and caddie for this year’s tournaments. And with Tabuchi having previous experience as a caddie, his approach to the game may prove itself a catalyst for the golfer.
