Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign has gotten off to a disappointing start. After tying 1-1 in their opening match against DR Congo on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Roberto Martínez’s side is now dealing with more than just problems on the pitch.

Following Portugal’s underwhelming performance, João Neves described Cristiano Ronaldo as “just another player.” Many fans interpreted the remark as a dig at the captain, and it quickly sparked backlash against the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

The controversy escalated further when a viral social media claim alleged that Neves’ girlfriend, Madalena Aragão, had taken aim at Ronaldo in the comments section of one of her Instagram posts featuring the couple.

According to screenshots circulating online, one user commented, “Your boyfriend is a ret@rd tell him to pass the ball to my GOAT.” Aragão was allegedly shown replying, “Tell your goat to retire he’s very se!fish.”

The screenshot was shared on X by the account “TheEuropeanLad” and quickly went viral, attracting a wave of hateful comments directed at Aragão.

But did Madalena Aragão really post the comment, or is the viral screenshot misleading? Here’s what we found.

Our Verdict: False

According to Give Me Sport, the exchange was completely fabricated. The viral screenshot had been digitally altered to insert both comments. The Instagram post from Aragão that supposedly contained the exchange was originally published on April 6, 2025, and there is no evidence that the alleged comments were ever posted.

Even if Aragão had made the comment, she would still have every right to express her opinion without being subjected to online abuse. In this case, however, the exchange itself turned out to be entirely fabricated.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s fiancée comes to defend him

The fake exchange managed to convince Ronaldo’s fiancée, Georgina Rodriguez, who came to his defense. “Wow! This generation is coming through strong,” she wrote. Meanwhile, Portugal teammate Ruben Dias reportedly attempted to defuse the situation behind the scenes.

Portugal will next face Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Houston Stadium. Roberto Martínez’s side is in desperate need of a victory to keep its hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. Portugal will then take on Colombia on Sunday, June 28, in its final Group Stage fixture.
