Roger announced his intentions to retire on the 15th of September. He played his last match at the Laver Cup, playing for Team Europe against Team World.

He partnered Rafael Nadal in a doubles match against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. The Swiss-Spanish duo lost the match – 6-4, 6-7, 9-11 in what was an emotional ending.

After the match, Federer delivered a heart-rending speech with tears in his eyes and a lump in his throat. “It has been a wonderful day. I told the guys, ‘I?m happy. I?m not sad’. And it does feel like a celebration to me. I wanted to feel like this at the end, and it?s exactly what I hoped for so thank you,”?said a tearful Federer.
