Former Formula One world champion Nico Rosberg has come out to show his support to Sebastian Vettel’s comments. The 4-time world champion, Vettel, has expressed his displeasure on the sprint qualifying win being counted as the pole position.

F1 is introducing a sprint qualifying at the British Grand Prix this weekend. The format will provide more racing and more excitement for the fans, but the format will regard winning the sprint qualifying in pole position for the race.

Pole position should go to the guy who goes fastest in one lap: Sebastian Vettel

As reported by Autosport, Vettel, who is excited about the introduction of the sprint qualifying, has called the format weird. “Pole is the fastest lap time achieved, or the fastest laptime in qualifying,” said the 4-time world champion.

“It gets all a bit confusing. But obviously, it depends. If this is a one-off, then it doesn’t do much harm.

But, if we end up having 10 sprint races next year or in the future, then I think it’s just a bit weird. So, pole position should go to the guy who goes fastest in one lap.“ Vettel clarified.

“It’s a new discipline, so they didn’t have it 50 years ago, and now we have it. Then we just add a new column to the statistics,” said Vettel.

Nico Rosberg feels the sprint race winner should not secure pole position for Sunday’s race

Former F1 world champion, Nico Rosberg, has supported Vettel’s claims. He took to social media to show support to his countryman.

“This is not the right decision. Pole should 100% has to go to the fastest guy in qualifying,” said the former Mercedes driver.

He also stated that the decision would hammer the statistics as well. Rosberg concluded, “The sprint race winner should not be awarded pole position. That will totally cannibalize the historic F1 statistics.” 

Leading up to tomorrow’s sprint qualifying and even in the event’s aftermath, the debate will continue. However, come what may, sprint qualifying will feature tomorrow afternoon at Silverstone.
