Sergio Perez has made a terrific start to his 2022 campaign. The Red Bull driver has finished second twice in the first 4 races of the season and is currently 3rd in the driver’s championship.

With Max Verstappen, the Mexican driver came home to finish second at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to bring home Red Bull’s first 1-2 in 6 years. He will go to Miami next week full of confidence and believing that he has a chance to win his first race of the season.

Recently, Checo was asked during an interview about the lack of driver fights in F1 as compared to NASCAR. He gave a befitting answer to why drivers don’t fight in Formula One.

“The problem in Formula One is if you fight another driver, the consequences will be huge. And probably in NASCAR, they like fighting. It’s like WWE, right? It’s a combination of car racing with fighting. So it’s cool. It’s really nice, NASCAR,” said Checo.

Can Sergio Perez win his first world championship this season?

The Red Bull driver is certainly in contention for the championship after the first 4 races of the season. He’s just a couple of points behind his world champion teammate and around 20 points behind championship leader Charles Leclerc.

Perez believes he can win his first world championship with Red Bull if given the opportunity. “It would be disrespectful to myself and my family. I don’t have to drive in Formula 1. I’m here because I want to be a champion,” said Perez.

But he recognized that sometimes he has to choose the team over his own self-interests. “If I can support the team and I’m not in a position to fight, then I’m going to do everything there, like in Abu Dhabi last year. There are moments when you have to put the team first,” said Checo.

The Mexican driver has a real chance to compete for the championship this season if he continues his consistent performances. But it is not all in his hands as he may not be the preferred driver for Red Bull currently.

It is likely that the Austrian team might once again back the world champion, Max Verstappen, for the title. Hopefully, Checo can change that fact with his performances this season.
