The Red Bull Vs Mercedes rivalry reached its pinnacle in the 2021 season. Both teams shared the spoils of the championship season, but neither was fully satisfied. However, the new season has shifted Red Bull’s focus from Mercedes as a new challenger (Ferrari) has emerged.

A struggling start to the season for Mercedes was a surprise to many and a relief to some. The persistent porpoising issues plagued the start, as Hamilton struggled in the ‘underivable’ W13. Owing to the porpoising, the championship chances have become slim but not impossible. This motivated the Brackley-based outfit to keep pushing, and the results are visible after 11 races.

Red Bull’s Christian Horner is noticing these improvements, especially in the last few races. He said, “We expect them [Mercedes] to be quick in [Paul] Ricard. They’re showing flashes of they being there. The last two races have been really decent for them and there has been no sign of any porpoising at all. They seem to be slowly bringing themselves back into the game.”

“They keep continuedly scoring points, I’m not sure how far they are in the constructors’ or drivers’ [championships] at the moment, but sometimes have more cars to play is a good thing. I think for the fans is great to have six cars competing for victories.” 

The competitive aspect is always important and Mercedes, Red Bull, and Ferrari can light up the second half of the season. If Russell and Hamilton can consistently score podiums, F1 fans are in for a three-horse race.

Red Bull boss takes a dig at the Mercedes pilots

Among the improvements, the Red Bull boss is also noticing similarities in the Mercedes men. The Brit is pointing fingers at the Mercedes drivers for targeting the Red Bull cars.

Horner referred to the Russell and Perez clash, a carbon copy of the Albon and Hamilton crash from the 2020 Austrian GP, and said, “I don’t think Mercedes like our cars going around the outside at turn four.” 

As the 2022 F1 season progresses, one can expect the Red Bull and Mercedes rivalry to ignite new flames.
