Mercedes’ Spanish GP weekend began with controversy. Team Principal Toto Wolff got the police involved after an anonymous whistleblower accused them of willingly ‘sabotaging’ Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton‘s performances. The Austrian went all out in bashing the ‘cowards’ and ‘conspiracy theorists’ who attempted to derail Mercedes from behind a computer screen. However, the change that the anonymous email brought within the Mercedes dynamic has amused Ralf Schumacher.

In Monaco, Lewis Hamilton hinted at a possible George Russell bias within Mercedes. Incidentally, his prediction of not anticipating to beat his teammate in qualifying rang true in Canada. Furthermore, Hamilton hinted at fishy business with his tire temperatures, and the race strategy was botched too. This led to a wave of negativity being unleashed towards Mercedes on social media.

Coming into Spain, Hamilton was 8-1 down on his teammate in qualifying. But surprisingly, that trend broke, with the 7x champ out-qualifying his teammate to take P3. Because this came right after the ‘sabotage’ accusations got overwhelming for the team, Ralf Schumacher threw a taunt at Toto Wolff’s way. “Complain once and Lewis is already ahead,” the German driver cheekily said after Wolff left their Sky Sports interview.

Schumacher could’ve curtailed his words considering how the police are investigating the case. But he decided to intensify the drama. On Toto Wolff’s end, however, he assures that his relationship with Hamilton is as good as ever. And this stance was verified after his post-qualifying comments for his close friend.

Toto Wolff expresses happiness for Lewis Hamilton as unwanted qualifying streak ends

After informing the media about the police investigation, Toto Wolff assured how he wants to end the 12-year partnership with Lewis Hamilton “on a high”. Moreover, the 39-year-old racing in his element with the upgraded W15 and out-qualifying George Russell was a moment to cherish for him and Wolff.

“Yeah, I think he’s (Hamilton) always been energized,” the Mercedes boss said post-quali. “But the gaps are so tiny. You can see today, it can swing one direction or the other and I’m happy that it went good for him today,” Wolff added, implying the existence of no tension between them.

With both Ferraris and Oscar Piastri’s McLaren behind Mercedes, Hamilton could secure his first podium of 2024. Provided the weather doesn’t play spoilsport, the Silver Arrows could also snatch a rare double podium, which they missed in Canada.
