Taylor Swift has recently made headlines not only for her chart-topping hits and the Eras Tour but also for her frequent use of private jets. It is quite well known that traveling with a private jet is the worst form of travel for the environment in terms of emissions per mile per passenger. According to a report from Livemint, research conducted by ‘A Yard Study’ suggested that Swift was the top celebrity CO2 emission offender in 2022, a title she supposedly retained in 2023 as well.

According to a recent report from UNILAD, Taylor Swift used her private jet 12 times in 2023 to be by the side of her new love interest from Kansas City, Travis Kelce. It’s a sweet gesture when you’re in love, but not quite friendly to the environment. The report estimated that these flights have used up 12,622 gallons of jet fuel, which comes around to $70,779 worth of fuel. And recently, a Formula 1 fan made a video that hilariously poked fun at her use of jets.

Taylor Swift’s flights amount to 138 tons of CO2 emissions

Criticism has often been directed at Swift for her significant carbon footprint, owing to her ownership of two multi-million dollar planes: a Dassault Falcon 7x and a Dassault Falcon 900. According to UNILAD’s report, Swift’s flights to see her boyfriend in 2023 have pumped out a total of 138 tons of CO2 emissions. To put that into perspective, it’s equivalent to the energy usage of 17 houses for a year or the electricity consumption of 26.9 homes annually.

According to the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, the emissions produced by her flights would require planting approximately 2,282 trees and allowing them to mature over a decade to offset the environmental harm caused by 138 tons of CO2 emissions. Despite the environmental concerns, Swift and Kelce continued to travel frequently to support each other’s commitments. An F1 fan recently posted a hilarious video on X captioned, “Taylor Swift Abu Dhabi GP hotlap.”

However, Swift’s spokesperson defended her actions by stating that she had purchased more than double the required carbon credits to offset all tour travel even before the start of the Eras Tour in March 2023. These additional credits were expected to account for the extra flights taken to support Kelce’s games and her planned tour travels.

Swift has threatened to sue the student tracking her jets

A young student named Jack Sweeney, who’s known for tracking the flights of celebrities could face trouble as Taylor Swift’s lawyers have threatened to sue him. Sweeney uses publicly available data and monitors the movements of private jets owned by the many wealthy celebrities including Taylor Swift, and shares this information online. Swift’s legal team says that this tracking is the same as “stalking” and poses a serious safety risk to the singer.

According to a report from BBC, Swift’s lawyers emphasize the history of stalkers the singer has dealt with and argue that Sweeney’s data could provide them with “a roadmap to carry out their plans”. The letter characterizes the situation as a “life-or-death matter” for Swift, asserting that the shared flight information poses “an imminent threat to her safety and well-being.”

Sweeney himself has refused any intention of harming Swift. In a statement to BBC, he said, “Nowhere do I intend for harm. I actually think Swift has some good songs. I believe in transparency and public information.”
