Annoyed with incidents of the same kind hindering his winning chances, Max Verstappen is suggesting a new rule. With the new 2022 regulations, it’s already hard to keep up with the rules of Formula 1. But the reigning world champion wants a new penalty to be introduced in the sport.

The suggested penalty is in accordance with the incidents at the Monaco GP qualifying. Although the penalty would’ve penalized his teammate on this occasion, Verstappen wants to see the change, regardless.

Max Verstappen and Red Bull pushing for a new penalty

Verstappen could not improve on his time in Monaco qualifying because of a red flag. This is the second time in a row as Leclerc’s crash ended the qualifying prematurely last year. Even though Sergio Perez is guilty of this year’s red flag incident, Verstappen is suggesting a penalty.

The Red Bull man said, “It is irritating and a pity, of course, that the one who put it in the wall was my teammate. But in the end, you don’t get a penalty for that. So if you know you have a good first run, then you can think ‘ah well, you know what, I’ll park it and tactically send it into the wall’. You could do that.”

The scenario Verstappen describes is what Nico Rosberg was accused of in 2014 to hinder Lewis‘s flying lap. “That’s something we’ve been working on for a while,” he added regarding his efforts toward the penalty implementation with his team and FIA.

Verstappen camp revolting against the salary cap

The introduction and reduction of the budget cap have created plenty of controversies. Although currently the budget cap does not include the salaries of the drivers, Formula 1 is debating about introducing one in the future.

Verstappen’s manager has labeled the idea as “Total idiocy,” before adding, “It would then be very strange if you were to limit only the driver’s earnings model.” He also asserted that the Red Bull Dutchman is responsible for the Netherlands Grand Prix, a massive revenue stream for the sport.
