George Russell’s unwanted streak continued as the young Brit yet again failed to register his first points with Williams.

Russell qualified for the Austrian GP at P9. However, the Williams driver soon got his best start in F1, as he started the race at P8, thanks to Sebastian Vettel’s three-place grid penalty for impeding Fernando Alonso on turn 10.

The 23-year-old had one of the best races in his short F1 career as he stayed within the points zone for several laps. However, he couldn’t get the job done.

Alonso always going to catch me: George Russell

During the final few laps of the race, two-time champion Fernando Alonso overtook Russel at turn 4. As a result, George Russell finished P11 and was left disappointed with the result.

“I did everything I could, but ultimately the speed that Fernando had was always going to catch me. We did a great job on one lap yesterday, but they were inherently a bit faster than us and they were always going to get ahead,” said the Williams driver.

George Russell revealed that he was gaining experience with every passing race weekend and was a bit surprised at not having many battles with other drivers. However, in three years on the grid, Russell has experienced a few battles with other drivers and lost most of them because of the limitation of his car.

“I guess the most important thing was the experience. And having that feeling of doing it in an F1 car is very different with all the downforce and dirty air. So I’m just gaining experience. It feels a bit strange, I have been here three years and I have not had so many battles,” said Russell.

The two-time world champion Alonso has never been shy of praising George Russell and said that he had hoped that it would be anyone apart from the young Brit from whom he took the P10 spot at the Austrian GP.

“I felt a little bit sad for George because he drove an amazing weekend, and when I saw P10 was him, I was hoping anyone apart from him… but that’s the sport,” said Fernando Alonso in the post race press conference. “But I had much better tires, much better traction out of [Turn 3] and I could make the move three laps from the end. So he will have more opportunities hopefully for podiums and wins in the future.”
