“He won in Spa. He wins at Monza!” exclaimed David Croft as the Italian crowd roared for their hero, Charles Leclerc, crossing the finish line to emerge victorious at the 2019 Italian GP. A moment that induces goosebumps every time you rewatch it. But since that ecstatic moment 4 years ago, Ferrari has not managed to recreate any of that magic in front of their home crowd. At Monza on Saturday, the Monegasque could not get pole position. Despite that, he has given the 350,000 fans something to be joyous about.

Qualifying at the ‘Temple of Speed’ is always a thriller. And so was yesterday’s. The Ferrari boys showed up in style, with Carlos Sainz even out-qualifying the vehement Max Verstappen for Pole position. But the best that Leclerc could do was P3, falling 6 hundredths short of the Dutchman, in P2. Though the Red Bull’s race pace is seemingly considered to be better, the Monegasque sounded a bit optimistic for a victory.

“I want to believe in it, but looking at the data right now they have (made) one more step forward in race. But…” said Leclerc before pausing to let out his inner, happy anticipation through a smile. “I don’t know. I have something inside that tells me it’s possible. Let’s see tomorrow.”

He sounded a bit superstitious about letting out the supposed advantage that they have. However, the same cannot be said about his teammate, who’s riding a wave of confidence.

Carlos Sainz confidently claims what Charles Leclerc was hesitant about

Carlos, can you win the race on Sunday? Yes. That is the gist of what he had to say after securing pole position in front of hundreds of thousands of Tifosi. While Charles Leclerc sounded a bit reluctant to confirm that the RB19 might not be as strong as perceived, Carlos Sainz was confident of taking the win.

“We’ll need to work as a team and give it our best shot,” said the Spaniard. “It’s a good opportunity tomorrow, but being realistic, Red Bull should be quicker. We’re just going to try to make their life as complicated as possible and take the win.”
