.In the fast-paced and competitive world of Formula 1, everyone is trying to get an edge over the competition. Drivers are trying to drive faster than other drivers and teams are trying to give their drivers faster cars than the rest of the grid. One potential way of improving performance is to replicate the car of precious years’ champions. This is exactly what a lot of teams did after the 2022 season by replicating the Red Bull RB18 chassis. However, this practice of copying an intricate chassis does not come without its challenges. Haas’s boss, Guenther Steiner, dwelled upon these difficulties potentially upsetting the team back in Maranello.

That’s right, even Ferrari is trying to copy RB19’s design, a prediction made by a Red Bull outcast. These desperate attempts by the teams are a result of Red Bull’s unparalleled superiority in the current season. However, copying the RB19 chassis just by looking at it won’t be an easy task explains the Haas boss to Autosport magazine as quoted by Formula Passion.

“We are trying out different concepts, but you can’t jump completely to what Red Bull does,” says Steiner. “Following the Red Bull bodywork, which you can copy because you can see it, doesn’t mean going any further fast, because there is a lot to do to make it work. With Ferrari suspension, some things cannot be done. Then maybe from next year, we’ll follow the Red Bull route, but we’ll have to be 100% sure, because to make that type of bodywork work, you need a new chassis and new suspension. It’s not that easy.” (Translated by Google)

The brilliant mind of Adrian Newey has produced incredible cars year after year. So to assume copying his work from the outside looking in will be naive. However, there is one additional step that teams can take to replicate the Red Bull chassis.

The aspect of copying we are discussing here is Aston Martin’s poaching of the Red Bull staff. Apart from investing millions into the team’s infrastructure, the investment that is reaping the most rewards is in the personnel. Lawrence Stroll needed the minds behind the car as well, apart from throwing his money in its development. This aspect of copying is the most important one in getting Aston Martin where it is currently.

We doubt most teams will try to poach engineers from Red Bull in an attempt to copy the Red Bull challenger. However, Ferrari is on the lookout for new engineers, and they could potentially look within the Austrian team for some new recruits.
