Nobody, including Fernando Alonso, would’ve expected to see himself in such a position in the current campaign. At 41, the Spaniard is finishing on the podium more often than not and fighting for race wins. In fact, in Monaco, Alonso had the best qualifying result of the season so far. So why is there an air of disappointment in the Aston Martin garage? Well, we all know the tides in Formula 1 turn fast and that is exactly what has happened with Aston Martin. From seventh in the constructors to fighting for race wins, expectations are riding high. This is exactly why Alonso and Co. aren’t happy with the Monaco GP quali result.

Alonso is a one-man army, and he is showcasing that week in and week out. In fact, after his initial inhibitions about the Aston Martin project, the Spaniard has showcased nothing but confidence in achieving his goal. Apparently, these high standards are contagious, and the Aston Martin garage has caught the bug. Team principal Mike Krack revealed that to the media, as quoted by Soy Motor.

Krack had to explain the team’s shift in expectations while discussing the air of disappointment despite starting in second for the race. “This shows how quickly our ambitions have changed, but yeah, we’re a bit disappointed because the first and second sectors by Max have been a bit slower and people are a bit disappointed. But let’s be realistic, six months ago, yeah If they had told us that we were going to start on the front row of the grid in Monaco on our own merits, everyone would be very happy,” he explained.

The Spaniard will start second in the race, giving him the best chance to break his race-win drought. However, the superiority of Max Verstappen in his RB19 cannot be taken for granted. Even the Aston Martin TP believes that some divine intervention will be necessary to beat the Red Bull juggernaut.

“The easiest thing would be to pass Max at the start, but I don’t think he will let us. So we will have to be creative, think, and pray for the rain. I think we should be competitive,” he pointed out. “In 78 laps many things can go wrong, you have to be patient because in such long races, anything can happen at any time. But I think we are going to be strong and we are going to give everything.”
