Daniel Ricciardo has not had the best year by any definition of the word. Having been unceremoniously shown the door at McLaren, the 33-year-old driver from Perth is struggling to find another seat to fill.

Daniel has received support from his fans who have condemned the way McLaren treated him. Of his large fanbase, one notable face is Harry Styles. Styles was seen sporting a t-shirt with Ricciardo printed on it. The t-shirt was supposedly on sale during the US GP in Austin last year.

Ricciardo, speaking to Fitzy & Wippa, was asked if he knew about Styles being a fan.

He saidIt’s hilarious. I was pretty stoked. We have a mutual friend…when that picture came out, the mutual friend said it’s funny this didn’t get picked up earlier because Harry wears this all the time.

When asked how many times the two have met, he said, “Look I want to lie with you and tell you we’ve met heaps of times and had a couple of beers, but I haven’t met him yet.”

The two haven’t even spoken on the phone, said Ricciardo. He added, “It kinda makes it even cooler that he’s a fan even before meeting him, alright!”

It is good to know that Styles is one of many fans who stand behind the Australian, who has officially announced the termination of his contract with McLaren.

Amid all this, Ricciardo has given some clarity about his future. He believes that staying in F1 just for the sake of it is not for him. He said, “I’ve certainly accepted if I’m not to be on the grid next year, I’m OK with that.”

“I’ve accepted that I’m not going to do everything — or my team’s not going to do everything — just to put me on the grid if it’s not right or it doesn’t make sense.”

This has been challenging, and if I am on the grid I want to know that it’s a place that I can enjoy it and feel like I can thrive, like an environment I feel like I can thrive in,” he said.

As things stand, it is not likely that we will see Danny in F1 next year. It will take a serendipitous intervention from one of the teams for that to change.
