The 2022 season has just six races left and everyone is already looking forward to 2023. With a stunning run of 11 wins, Max Verstappen is set to secure another championship title for Red Bull. Meanwhile, Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton has failed to win a single race in 2022.

But, there is still hope for Mercedes, as Damon Hill outlines Lewis Hamilton’s chances of making things not so easy on Verstappen.

Damon Hill thinks Mercedes can still win

Former F1 champion Damon Hill recently commented on the teams’ current state of affairs.

Mercedes is currently eyeing second place in the Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships. Hill thinks things can still change before Abu Dhabi.

Hill told the F1 Nation podcast: “There is a possibility [of a win]. Something will happen. We always get a crazy race, somewhere between now and the end of the year there will be a crazy race and Mercedes could well pick up that win.”

He went on to add, “There is going to be rain, one of them is going to be wet, we know Suzuka [Japanese GP] is going to be wet.”

One can only hope Damon Hill’s speculations are true, as Max Verstappen’s second championship title seems all but written in stone.

Words of caution for Red Bull before the 2022 finale

Mercedes was not the only one to receive Damon Hill’s scrutiny. The 1996 world champion also discussed Red Bull’s success and their near-certain victory this season.

“If you stand still, for a second in Formula 1, in this sport you are going to be swamped. You are literally going to sink into quicksand. So the pace for anyone, even if they are winning, the pressure is relentless,” said Hill.

Hill’s words of caution to Red Bull are not to go unheeded. Team principal Christian Horner has already said on F1 Beyond the Grid he’s reluctant to count his chickens early. So, there seems to be no risk of getting complacent on Red Bull’s end at least.

“If they don’t do any more development now on this car, I think Ferrari and Mercedes will be all over them by the time you get to Abu Dhabi,” Hill added, amusingly.

It seems unlikely that Red Bull will do more development on this car, considering they are already looking ahead to the 2023 season. But on the bright side, for them, so is everyone else.
